WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

FAIRFIELD A special meeting of the Fairfield Women’s Institute was held last Thursday, June 20, to discuss business postponed on account of the birthday party held the previous week. The president, Mrs W. King, presided, and after reading the motto for the month, the roll call, asking for ideas as to how the institute could best help in patriotic work, was answered. This caused much discussion and brought forward some good ideas. Miss Spencer’s letter, dealing with the Wellington conference, was read, and after discussion the resolution was put to the vote. Members were asked to keep in touch through “ Town and Country,” as owing to the paper restrictions it was impossible to send out notices of all happenings. Arrangements were made for the planting of a tree donated by Mr King, and thanks were also tendered to Mrs Phyllis, who donated a beautiful hand-made tray and offered to give demonstrations of how such work was done. Each member was asked to bring one child’s garment, made from clothes no longer used by them, as a contribution to the refugee clothing. It was also suggested that knitted squares for bed-covers would be very useful and members were asked to help in this way. Members were reminded that the soldiers’ parcels were due to be sent and final arrangements were made. It was decided to hold a “ white elephant ” sale in July, the proceeds to be given to patriotic work. Two new members were welcomed, Mrs Cottingham and Mrs Morris. Afternoon tea, served by Mesdames Langlands, Bell, Knight and Andrews, brought the afternoon to a close. KIHIKIHI The Kihikihi Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting in the Kihikihi Town Hall recently, Mrs Helwig presiding over a good attendance. Mrs Helwig welcomed members and visitors. Mrs Hawkins gave an interesting account of the institute trip to the Centennial Exhibition. Competitions were won by the following: Date loaf, Mrs Helwig 1, Mrs Gordon 2; knitted balaclava, Mrs Helwig 1, Mrs Adams 2; single bloom, Mrs Helwig 1. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Robinson and Allen. JUBILEE Mrs W. King presided at the June meeting of the Jubilee Women’s Institute, at which there was a good attendance. The roll call, “ Children’s sayings,” was quite interesting. Members from the Post and Telegraph Social Club, Mesdames Rhodes, Buckland, Wood and Bomfield, entertained with a play, for which they were warmly applauded. Appreciation was shown by the presentation to each lady of a shoulder spray. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Fowle, Sutherland and Miss Fawle, and an interesting talk was given by Mrs Smart, from the School of Hairdressing, on the care of the hair and skin. It was decided to hand the balaclava caps made for competition to the Red Cross. The results were: Mrs Still 1, Mrs A. Fisher 2. The competition for articles made from used matches was won by Mrs P. Nelson, with a smoker’s companion, and Mrs Fowle was second with a tray. Novelty, made of flowers, was won by Mrs Sandos, and Mrs Higgins (equal) with Mrs Thomley second. WARDVILLE The Wardville Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting on Thursday, June 27, when there was a good attendance. Arrangements were made to make up parcels for the men in camp in New Zealand from this district. It was decided not to send a delegate to the conference. Mrs M. Hollis (R.M.D. Waharoa) was elected secretary to replace Mrs Wallace, who found it necessary to resign on account of ill-health. Mrs Hollis gave a most interesting talk on the care and feeding of hens. Mrs Elliot and Miss Elliot carried out the duties of hostesses.
