MOUNTLEY STUD SALE TOP PRICE OF 101 GNS. BERKSHIRES IN REQUEST Keen prices were paid at the seventh sale of the Mountley pedigree pig stud, the property of Mr A. T. Rogers, at Ngaruawahia, yesterday. The top price of 101 gns was the highest realised at a pedigree sale in the Waikato for many years. This figure was given by Mr A. F. Mills, of Paeroa, for a Berkshire sow. Mountley Verna 6th, a particularly attractive sort by the imported boar, Woodburn Landon, and from Dominion Vema. She was sold with her maiden litter of nine pigs. Competition from the large and representative bench of buyers was keen right through the sale although some passings were made. Berkshires were in good request, the tops, apart from the highest figure of 101 gns, making from 31 gns to 59 gns. Although some buyers obtained some excellent Large Black boars and sows at a cheap rate, good values were obtained for representatives of this breed. From 27 to 45 gns were paid for the tops and from 8 to 26£ gns for the others. Tamworths were not quite in such keen demand as the other two breeds, but good sorts were readily traded from 15 to 25 gns. Altogether 180 head, consisting of 66 Berkshires, 51 Tamworths and 63 Large Blacks, were catalogued. The sale was conducted by the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company, with Mr F. M. Harkness in the rostrum and Mr W. J. Livingstone as sales manager. Representative Buyers The second top price of the sale, 59 gns, was given for a Berkshire boar, Ngahape Gay Cavalier, by Woodburn Landon (imp.) and from Mountley Grand Girl 15th. The buyers were the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company as agents for an Australian client. At 45J gns Mr W. Wardrop. of Tauranga, was the buyer of a Large Black sow, Ngahape Biddy 3rd, an attractive two-year-old by Grinton Dictator from Ngahape Biddy.
