OBITUARY

MR CHARLES JAMES WINDER PROMINENT IN RACING The death occurred at Te Rapa today of a prominent racing figure of the Auckland Province, Mr Charles James Winder, aged 89 years, of Thames. A son of Mr and Mrs Patrick Winder, Mr Winder was born at Listowel, County Kerry, Ireland, and was a direct descendant of the Windermere Winders, of Lake Windermere, England. In 1867 he accompanied his parents to New Zealand, landing at Auckland and then proceeding to Thames in the days of the gold rush. After working in the goldfields for some time Mr Winder became a gum merchant on the East Coast, an occupation which claimed his attention for a considerable time. Later he became engaged in farming. With the assistance of his sons he had worked a farm ever since. About 60 years ago Mr Winder was married at Thames to Miss Elizabeth Frances Dufty, a daughter of Mr Thomas Dufty, formerly a well-known miner of the Thames district. Mrs Winder predeceased him 35 years ago. Taking a keen interest in horse racing, Mr Winder was known throughout the Auckland Province in this sphere, being at the time of his death the oldest member of the Thames Jockey Club. He was associated with the club from its inception, and was instrumental in providing the finance to secure Parawai, the present location of the club’s course. He was a life member of the club and was formerly the treasurer. Mr Winder owned a number of race horses some years ago. He also took a keen interest in the Thames Bowling Club, of which he was a foundation member.

Mr Winder is survived by six sons and six daughters. They are: Messrs C. W. Winder (Wharepa), F. Winder (Thames), J. A. Winder (Thames), G. Winder (Hikutaia), E. Winder (Wharepa), A. Winder (Te Rapa); Mesdames H. Dowley (Sydney), G. Sullivan (Thames), B. Wallace (Auckland), L. Bennington (Thames), F. Trigger (Thames), and E. Evington (Auckland). There are 29 grandchildren and five great-grand-children. The funeral will leave the residence of Mr A. Winder, Te Rapa, tomorrow morning for the Shortland Cemetery, calling at St. George’s Church, Thames, prior to interment.

MRS EMILY KNIGHT The death has occurred in Whangarei of Mrs Emily Knight, aged 81 year's, widow of Mr J. Knight, who was formerly a well-known personality in the Waikato. Mrs Knight came from Manawatu with her husband when Mr Knight purchased the Woodside property, and they farmed the estate for many years. When Mr Knight retired they moved to Auckland, raid on the death of her husband a few years ago Mrs Knight lived with her daughter, Mrs J. R. S. Richardson, of Whangarel.
