SOLDIERS AND LIQUOR

NEW REGULATIONS POSSESSION AN OFFENCE (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday “No person shall sell any intoxicating liquor to any member of the defence forces of New Zealand when in uniform for consumption elsewhere than on the premises where sold,” state the Supply of Liquor to Soldiers’ Emergency Regulations, 1940, which are issued with to-night’s Gazette. These regulations prevent anyone supplying or acting as agent for the purchase of intoxicating liquor for members of the defence forces when in uniform elsewhere than on the premises where it is given, supplied or purchased. The supply of intoxicating liquor to members of the defence forces in uniform in public conveyances, such as trains, railway carriages, railcars, etc., is also prohibited, and members of the defence forces in uniform are debarred from taking liquor or having it in their possession in public conveyances. Ships are excluded from the last two provisions. ARREST BY POLICE ISSUE OF WARRANTS (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday If the Adjutant-General of the defence forces of the Dominion or any officer of the forces to whom he may have delegated his powers has reasonable cause to suspect that a member of the defence forces of New Zealand has committed an offence for which he is liable to be tried and punished under the Army Act, the Adjutant-General or his representative may issue to an officer of the police a warrant for such member’s arrest. This is a provision contained in the Civil Arrest of Soldiers Emergency Regulations, 1940, which are issued with to-night’s Gazette. The regulations further stipulate that warrants may be addressed to all constables and may be executed by any constable. Members of the forces so arrested will be delivered into military custody in accordance with the tenor of the warrant.
