VISIT TO BERLIN
UNITED STATES ENVOY MEETS VON RIBBENTROP APPRECIATION OF FINNS (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyrlffet) (Received March 2, 10.30 tom.) BERLIN, March 1 Mr Sumner Welles, the American Envoy, arrived today and was greeted by Baron von Weizaecker, Director of the Political Department of the German Foreign Office; Mr Alexander Kirk, United States Charge d’Affaires; and the entire staff of the United States Embassy. There was also a group of Finnish journalists, who explained: “We want to show appreciation of American help. We are counting on America to save us.” Mr Welles proceeded to the Adlon Hotel to the accompaniment of the wailing of sirens, as the city was having a trial air raid alarm. A German Foreign Office official had travelled with Mr Welles from the Swiss frontier. Mr Welles later went to the Wilhelmstrasse, where he conferred with von Ribbentrop. To Meet Hitler Mr Welles told pressmen that his talk with von Ribbentrop was extremely interesting. He added that he will meet Hitler tomorrow.
