POLO TOURNAMENT

THREE-DAY EVENT OPENS RESULTS FROM TE AROHA (Special to Times) TE AROHA, Thursday The Waihou Polo Club commenced a three-day tournament at the Te Aroha Showgrounds today. Four senior teams are competing for the' Douglas Cup and five junior teams for the Goosman Cup. The tournament opened in excellent weather and some good play was witnessed. The results of the junior games played this morning were:—Hauraki A beat Waihou B, 5 goals to 4; Hauraki B beat Hikutaia B, 5-4; Morrinsville beat Matangi, 8-5. In the first senior game, Morrinsville (F. Klaus, J. Elliot, C. McCullagh and R. Russell) beat Matangi (G. Peake, J. Ranstead, R. Townsend and McNichol) 8-5. Matangi conceded Morrinsville 5 goals. The goals for Morrinsville were scored by F. Klaus, J. Elliot and McCullagh. Russell was thrown from his horse when it collided with that ridden by G. Peake and was replaced by J. Klaus in the fifth chukka. The scorers for Matangi were G. Peake 3, Ranstead 1 and McNicol 1.

Both teams were at the top of their form and provided some thrilling play. R. Peake was perhaps outstanding with his back-handed play, but the members of both teams were consistently good. SECOND DAY WINS WAIHOU AND MORRINSVILLE (Special to Times) TE AROHA, Friday There was a bigger attendance at the showgrounds today when the Waihou Polo Club held the second day’s tournament. The junior matches played this morning resulted as follows:—Hikutaia B 9, Waihou B 10; Hikutaia A 8, Hauraki B 10; Hauraki A, a bye. Senior Games.—Waihou A 9 (G. Wybourne, J. O’Grady, P. O’Grady, M. Fitzgerald) beat Matangi 8 (A. McNicholl, Townsend, J. Ranstead, G. Peake). Matangi (handicap 1) conceded Waihou (handicap 7) six goals. Goals were scored for Matangi by McNicholl in the first chukka, K. Peake in the third, Peake (2) and Ranstead in the fourth. Peake scored again in the fifth and Ranstead in the final chukka. For Waihou Fitzgerald scored in the fourth chukka and J. O’Grady in the fifth. Second Game. Morrinsville (F. Klaus, A. McCullagh, J. and A. Elliott) 8 won from Cambridge (Cox, Brunskill, R. and K. Peake) 2. Morrinsville was conceded four goals by Cambridge. Scorers for Morrinsville wore Klaus in the first chukka, Elliott in the second, McCullagh in the fourth and Elliott in the fifth. The Cambridge scorers were R. Peake in the first chukka and Cox in the third. The teams competing for the cups tomorrow are Hauraki A v. Hauraki B for the Goosman Cup, and Morrinsville v. Waihou for the Douglas Cup.
