MAORIS’ WORK

FUNDS FOR RED CROSS NEARLY £SOO RAISED STRONGEST WAIKATO BRANCH Under the guidance of Princess Te Puea Herangi, of Ngaruawahia, the Waikato Maoris have raised nearly £SOO for the funds of the Red Cross Society. At the beginning of February the sum was £426. With a financial membership of about 1200, the Maoris’ branch of the society is the largest in the Waikato district and probably the most active. The pa has been open to the public since the outbreak of war, visitors paying a small fee which is devoted to the Red Cross funds. “Our people are very keen to help in the war effort,” stated Princess Te Puea. “To help the funds of the Red Cross 10 sub-committees were appointed to conduct raffles, dances and every other method of raising funds. Old and young have joined in the task, doing their very best to make it as successful as possible.” Large quantities of kumaras and potatoes will shortly be present'd to the military camp at Hopu Hopu and to the headquarters of the Maori Battalion at Palmerston North.
