HIGH COST OF DEFENCE INDEPENDENCE FAVOURED PROBLEMS OF FUTURE (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Feb. 26, 3.15 p.m.) MANILA, Feb. 25 Reversing the attitude of his predecessor, Mr Paul McNutts, the High Commissioner, Mr Sayre, announced that he favours granting the Philippines independence in 1946, mainly because he believes that United States taxpayers are unwilling to support the increasing costs of defending the islands. Commenting on the advancing technique of war, he added: “I wonder whether it is going to be practicable for any nation to undertake to maintain or defend the kind of farflung military empires which developed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.”
