CHAT FROM PARIS
AUTUMN COAT CHIC Coats are presenting a new interest this season, both in colour and cut. Lines, for instance, are definitely different. The wide shoulder which last year's Paris interpreted by means of winged revers and shoulders that peaked outward to extremity. is come by in different manner with the 1940 designs. The Dolman sleeve achieves it subtly and is assisted by the high-set sharp-pointed collar that lies flat and horizontally. Otherwise, we are entirely collarless, as with a model in the always right and always becoming black. This is round and flat to the neck and buttoned simply down the front with seven sparsely-placed buttons of the ordinary “ shoe ” variety—though, of course, bigger. The coat is tailored to fit the figure from shoulder to thigh line and then to flare ever so slightly. There is no bell to the slender wasp waist, and
bust fullness is arrived at by means of darts. Dolman Roominess The Dolman sleeve gives a roominess above the elbow but shrinks to an all-but-fitted cuff. It is, as you know, inserted with a straight seam from shoulder to hem and great un-der-arm roominess. This model has hat and muff to accompany it, the former gay with a posy of brightly-tinted feathers set , forward in its saucer brim, the latter very large, held in at centre with a twist of looped cord and fixed posy to match. A variation, and something of a compromise, is made with the sidefastening coat that is belted and collared conveniently. The model sketched for you is typical of this style, and may be achieved in combination of cloth and velvet or, for the later season, close clipped fur. Note the important variation of the widths of the horij zontal bands. Most other arrange- | ments would be likely to give a defi- | nitely chunky and dwarfed appeari ance to the best of figures. This i is designed for grey with black and i the accompanying muff is grey and i lavish. The flare falls straight from | the waist.
