KING REY TRIUMPHS

BESIEGE AT GOOD ODDS FAVOURITES ALL FAIL HUNTER'S NIGHT SURPRISES Not a single favourite on the win machine realised expectations at Te Rapa on Saturday, the opening day of the Waikato Racing Club’s summer fixture, and only three public fancies on the place machine returned a dividend. Following the unsettled weather conditions of earlier in the week the club was most fortunate in the weather, and it was not until the last race that there was a suggestion of rain, a light drizzle being experienced for a few minutes.

The racing surface was in exceptionally good order under the circumstances, and throughout the racing was of a highly interesting nature.

King Rey, winner of the race in 1938, made amends for recent disappointments when he cleared away from the opposition at the end of the Storey Memorial Handicap, to register a convincing success over the lightweight, Racecamp, while in the sprint, the President’s Handicap, there was a further upset when the Te Awamutu representative, Beseige, ran right up to his best form to prevail in a fine finish with the outsider, Trilliarch, who ran on much better than formerly. Prices generally were most remunerative to those who shared in the successes of the various winners, Acreman was at double figures in the first, the win price of King Rey approached the double-figure mark, Hunter’s Night paid over a quarter of a century, Philcourt over threequarters of a score and the success of Beseige was attended by a doublefigure price on the win machine. White Rajah’s price in the last race was also a substantial one. While totalisator figures showed a decline on those for the corresponding day last year they must be considered most satisfactory under the circumstances as petrol restrictions, undoubted the primary factor, resulted in a smaller attendance, the gate taking of £732 being £147 below that for the corresponding day last season. Following are the concluding results:— LINLEY HACK HANDICAP or £250; 6 rur. ! 2—l 2—HUNTER’S NIGHT. Mr A. P. Pretty’s b g by Hunting- Song— Dark Night, 3yrs, 7.8, car, 7.8* (H.
