WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

FENCOURT The Fencourt Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting in the hall recently, when the president, Mrs S. D. Low, presided over a good attendance of members. Members stood in silence in sympathy with Mrs D. Ellison, who has recently suffered bereavement. After business matters had been dealt with, the forthcoming birthday party was discussed. It is to be held in the afternoon on Thursday, February 22. Wool for the knitting of gloves for the airmen was distributed. During January the Institute had charge of the Bring and Buy shop in Cambridge, and Mrs Low thanked those who had helped, and reported that the Red Cross funds had benefitted considerably by the effort. Mrs Middleton rendered songs, which were much appreciated. The roll call, “My favourite song,” met with good response. Competition results were as follows:—Best bloom, Mrs Bear 1, Mrs Hubbard 2, Mrs Feisst 3; jam sandwich, Mrs J. Smith 1, Mrs T. Turnbull 2, Mrs T. Hogan 3. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames R. Feisst and H. Long. HILLCREST The February meeting of the HiTlcrest Women’s Institute took place in I the Nixon Street Hall, recently, when Mrs Morley presided over a good attendance and welcomed all members. Mrs J. Ward Chapman, Mrs Gate, and a new member, Mrs Hildreth, were heartily welcomed. Mrs Chapman gave a very interesting account of the meeting of the Dominion Federation held in Wellington, an entertaining and descriptive talk on the Exhibition. It was decided that the annual picnic would take place at Auckland on Friday, February 23, when members will travel by bus. Further particulars can be obtained from Mrs W. Haines. Competition results were as follows:—Peanut Brownie?, Mrs Cox 1, Mrs Morley 2, Mrs Cockhead 3; nut and date loaf, Mrs Cockhead 1, Mrs Cox 2, Mrs Morley 3; best bloom, Mrs Hildreth 1, Mrs Haines 2. Supper was served by Mesdames Barnett, Roberts and Dunford. KAIPAKI The members of the Kaipaki Women’s Institute held their February meeting in the local hall. It had been intended to have another picnic 1 meeting at some beauty spot, the January picnic in the Leamington \ Domain having proved so successful, I but owing to the adverse weather conditions, the meeting was held in the hall. Mrs J. Graham, president, presided, and extended a welcome to all members and one visitor. Details were discussed and finalised regarding the Institute taking its turn to help entertain and cater for the soldiers on week-end leave from camp, in the Bledisloe Hall, Hamilton, on March 16 and 17. It was decided to purchase one book from headquarters of “Pioneer Tales,” for the use of the members. The roll call was interestingly answered, each member describing one happy day spent during the holi-

days. A competition for the best bowl of flowers, not to exceed twelve inches in height, was won by Mrs A. M. Fisher, and for the best article made from organdi, Miss M. Speake was first and Mrs C. Cowley second. The sales table was well laden and did good trade, Mrs H. A. Goodwin being in charge. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames A. Steenson, F. Boyd and Miss I. Godkin. The judges were Mrs Grant, a visitor, and Mrs R. Boyd. The president closed the meeting with a vote of thanks to all helpers WAHAROA Mrs Bums presided over a good attendance of members and visitors at the meeting of the Waharoa Women’s Institute. The motto for the day was “Without the Women’s Institute, the village would be destitute.” Arrangements were made for soldiers’ farewell evenings. Mrs Blackett was nominated as a new member, and nominations were received for the committee. Mrs Marshall gave a very interesting demonstration on serviette folding. The Glee Club gave two enjoyable items and Mrs Bums’ series of sketches were much appreciated. A very interesting link letter telljng of conditions in England was read. Competitions were won as follows: Wholemeal scones, Mrs Henderson 1, Mrs P. White 2, Mrs F. Smith, 3; gooseberry jelly, Mrs Leigh 1, Mrs Guy 2, Mrs P. White 3; vase of flowers, Mrs Petch 1, Mrs Marshall 2, Mrs Harris 3; best flower, Mesdames Williams, Leigh, Henderson and Guy. MATAMATA The February meeting of the Matamata Women’s Institute was held in St. Andrew’s Hall, Mrs Stewart presided. A competition arranged by Mrs Sutcliffe was won by Mrs C. Taylor. Mrs Wade gave a talk on her trip which was very much appreciated. Points competitions resulted as follows:—Dahlia, Mrs Elery 1, Mrs L. Robinson 2. Mrs Luxmore presided over the ! meeting of the Kio Kio Women’s Institute, when there was a good attendance despite unfavourable weather conditions. Mrs B. Board presided at the meet- , ing of the Hangatiki Women’s Institute. Mrs Beakle resumed her reading of the life of Madam Curie from the W.E.A. pamphlets.
