FEWER TOURISTS

LAST THREE MONTHS OF YEAR MORE IMMIGRANTS ARRIVE For the first eight months of last year, according to the abstract of statistics, the number of tourists visiting New Zealand rose by 220 over the figures for the corresponding period of 1938 to 8292, but for September, October, November and December the number was only 2201, compared with 4316 for the similar period cf the previous year, a decrease of 2615. Immigrants intending to make permanent residence in New Zealand numbered 8800 for the year, an increase of 3512 over the total for 1938. The number of New Zealand residents departing permanently was 3450, a decrease of 517. The Abstract does not give nationalities of immigrants. It is, however, remarked that an interesting feature of migration was the increase in the number of Chinese included in the arrivals. This applied particularly to females. In 1937 the excess of arrivals over departures of males was 58 and of females 23. In 1938 the excess was 142 and 81 respectively, and last year it was 250 and 305. For the whole year, excluding crews of vessels, through passengers and tourists on cruising liners, 39,566 persnos arrived in New Zealand and 32.653 departed. In 1938 the number of arrivals was 40,975 and the departures 38,880.
