U BOATS DESTROYED
FIVE IN A WEEK NEUTRAL SHIPS SUNK STRONG PROTEST TO GERMANY (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Feb. 16, 3.15 p.m.) BERGEN, Feb. 15 The Aftenblad relates, apropos of the arrival of survivors of the Snestad, how a U-boat, the fifth since February 9, was blown up and sunk by a British destroyer before it could torpedo a Norwegian vessel. The Norwegian ship’s crew, with its Snestad survivors whom they had rescued, had already taken to the boats. They returned to the vessel when the destroyer sank the submarine and brought her to port. The captain of the Tempo confirms that German planes bombed her and machine-gunned the lifeboats though her nationality was definitely marked.
A mine sank the Giorgio Ohlsen on the east coast of England. The fate of the crew of 32 is unknown. The newspaper Tidende demands joint neutral action in connection with attacks on their vessels. It adds that five months’ warfare has cost 500 Norwegian lives and 100,000 tons of neutral shipping, valued at £5,000,000. THE HAGUE, Feb. 15
Holland has protested to Germany against the torpedoing of the Burgerdijk.
