BRILLIANT RECORDS
GREAT WAR SERVICES NEWLY-CHOSEN OFFICERS Both Colonel H. E. Barrowclough, D. 5.0., M.C., president of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Defence League, and Dominion vicepresident, and Lieutenant-Colonel N. S. Falla, G.M.C., D. 5.0., who are Auckland residents, have outstanding records in their military careers. After leaving Otago University, Colonel Barrowclough joined the Otago Regiment and later transferred to the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. He first secured a commission in 1915, and at the age of. 24, in 1918, he secured promotion to temporarily lieutenant-colonel. He commanded the 4th Rifle Battalion in its great exploit at the capture of the famous walled fortress of Le Quesney, in November, 1918. Chairman of directors of the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, Limited, Lieutenant-Colonel N. S. Falla has a distinguished war record also. He was a captain in the field artillery of the second reinforcements which left New Zealand in 1914. Later he commanded the 4th (Howitzer) Battery at Anzac during the Gallipoli campaign, winning the D.S.O. and being mentioned in despatches. His rise was rapid and eventually he secured command of the Second Brigade, New Zealand Field Artillery, during the critical days between April and May, 1918, when the Germans were pressing vigorously their offensive in Flanders.
