“N.Z. ONWARD”
NEW ARMY BADGES ISSUED ON TRANSPORTS The intimation that New Zealand had adopted standardised hat and collar badges for all arms of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force, which was made some time ago, bereality for the first echelon while they were on the transports bound for Egypt. The badges were not distributed in New Zealand so that losses would not occur through the natural desire of parents and friends to obtain souvenirs. In design, the badges are formed by two fern leaves enclosing the initials “ N.Z.” surmounted by a Crown and bearing the word “ Onward ” below on a scroll. In a recent statement, the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones memtioned that one of the factors taken into consideration when adopting a universal badge was the production difficulty. To manufacture a supply locally would entail the cutting of 63 different dies for the 21 mounted and infantry regiments represented in the force. Moreover, the supply of brass in New Zealand was limited.
