SURPRISE BY FRANCISCO

WINS AT DOUBLE FIGURES HILLCREST AT GOOD ODDS The Auckland Trotting Club's February meeting was concluded at Alexandra Park, Epsom, yesterday, when the going was holding and cutting out. The big race of the day, the Alexandra Park Handicap, was won by Parauri from the Te Rapa representative Red Blush, while in the sprint event, the concluding event on the card, Francisco won well from the Hamilton representatives, Fortex and Our Peggy, to complete a winning double for the F. J. Smith stable. The Great Northern Trotting Stakes saw Diamond Trust prevail narrowly over Portadown with Earl's Pride a moderate third. Hillcrest was at double figures to win the Rangitoto Handicap from the Waikato representative, Our Jewel. Hillcrest was a hair way back in the middle stages, but put in a last run in the straight to get up on the outer and prevail in another close finish. Our Jewel, who was always well placed, being only a head away. , Kewpie’s Queen was followed early by ilandlcapper, this pair being in charge passing the stands the first time from Television, Lucky Love, Our Jewel, Kete Kura and Belfast Jack. As they came past again Kewple's Jewel was still setting the pace rrom Ilandlcapper, with Television, Lucky Love and Our Jewel still right up in the running. The order was unchanged along the back and across the top Kewpie‘s Queen being followed Into the straight by Television, Lucky Love and Our Jewel, with Hillcrest making a forward move. - In a fine finish, Hillcrest, on the outer, beat Our Jewel by a head, with Kete Kura half a length away.
