CRIME OF ARSON
OFFENCE IN CITY AREA (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Wednesday For setting fire to a wooden building in a thickly populated part of the city, Ernest Joseph Shrimpton, aged 33, grocer, was sentenced to reformative detention not exceeding three years. After a plea by counsel on account of the man’s age and domestic unhappiness, the judge said arson was far too serious for the court to be weak and admit to probation. The sentence must be a deterrent to other people. He told prisoner that the usual penalty was five years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
