HAMILTON PIPER
TROOPS PLAYED ASHORE FORMER DRUM-MAJOR ANOTHER AT WELLINGTON A former member of the Hamil- \ ton Caledonian Band, and a resident of Hamilton, Piper R. Mathieson. piped the New- Zealand troops ashore as they disembarked in Egypt. Just prior to the outbreak of the war he went to Palmerston North and from there he enlisted with the New Zea- 1 land Artillery. He did his military training at the Hopu Hopu camp, j Piper Mathieson learnt to play the pipes while he was in Hamilton, and was drum major of the Hamilton Pipe Band which won the Dominion i B grade championship in 1937. Hamilton has won a name among the troops for pipers. As the troopships drew out of Wellington har- 1 bour A. Sperry, of Hamilton, played the bagpipes, and G. Stewart, also of Hamilton, played the drum.
