STOREY MEMORIAL FIELD

FINE CONTEST PROMISED TWELVE TO CONTEST EVENT PROSPECTS UNDER REVIEW (By “Martian”) The big race on the first day of the Waikato Racing Club’s summer meeting, the Storey Memorial Handicap, to be decided at Te Rapa on Saturday, contains all the elements for a fine contest. Golden Sheila holds pride of place and her good form at the November meeting here, when, after running third on the first day with 9.0 to Taurangi and Balinavar, she made amends on the latter day by annexing the Hamilton Handicap (1$ miles), with 9.1, will ensure her solid support despite her 9.9. Subsequently Golden Sheila won the Alison Cup (11 miles) at Ellerslie and if she is produced in similar fettle this week she should make a bold bid to extend her account. She will be meeting Royevrus on similar terms to when she accounted for the latter at Auckland. Unsoundness has marred the career of Royevrus up to this stage but fit and well on the day, he will have to be reckoned with. King Rey has been racing consistently but somewhat unluckily in recent months and only twice in fourteen starts has he been further back than fourth. This season he won over hurdles at Riccarton at the Grand National meeting in August and since then has been placed on the fiat on eight occasions. Beau Repalre's Credentials Beau Repaired latest form ha# been most impressive and he is the early ruling favourite for Saturday’s big event. After winning the Christmas Handicap at Ellerslie he accounted for all but Fils de Vaals in the Summer Cup. He was then taken to Trentham to contest the Wellington Centennial Cup (14 miles) and his brilliant finishing effort into fourth from a seemingly impossible position saw him at short odds on the following day, when with the handy impost of 7.9 he prevailed in a spectacular finish with his halfbrother Royal Chief. Since the Wellington meeting A. J. Julian’s charge has done everything required of him and it will not be on the score of condition if he fails to show to advantage this week. The brilliant Our Jean won over the distance in the Takapuna Cup last month and the Cambridge representative should not find her rise of 81b a barrier to further achievement. It is in her favour, too, that she is at home under any type of conditions. The best performance of Royal Appellant this season was his narrow defeat of Catalogue In the A.R.C. Handicap on New Year’s Day and he won in a manner indicative of further success. However, he failed in both essays at the recent mid-sum-mer meeting at Ellerslie but on the latter occasion, over a mile and a quarter, was noticably finishing on. Lady Montana showed a glimpse of form in the Summer Handicap at Trentham, but she was not impressive at Rotorua over the week-end. Mintlaw Handily Placed Mintlaw won the Goldfields Cup at Thames and subsequently ran another good race to finish behind Our Jean and Fils de Vaals in the Takapuna Cup. He is handily placed with 7.4. Saccone won in hack company over a mile and a quarter during the Auckland holiday carnival but has since failed to run up to that promise. Eastern Heir won over hurdles at Thames and Racecamp has been racing with a consistency in hack class indicating that promotion to open company will not find him neglected in the betting lists. Good reports were to hand prior to the Rotorua meeting concerning the condition of Scotland, but he failed to make much impression on the Cup field at Arawa Park. At this stage it would appear that Beau Repaire, Our Jean, Golden Sheila and Royal Appellant will carry most support on Saturday.
