WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

WINTER SHOW ACTIVITIES It is the intention of the Women’s Institutes this year to enter a combined court at the Winter Show instead of following their usual practice of each Institute being a competitor. Mrs F. T. Wilson will be in charge of the court. Institute members will be interested to hear of a new class for women’s organisations in which a special prize will be offered for the best 12 sub-

jects suitable for discussion by women’s clubs, each organisation to enter a set of 12. Mr W. H. Paul has drawn up a specimen schedule of 12 subjects of interest to women, which will prove a help and provide a guide to those entering. It has also been decided to inaugurate a competition for Women’s Institute choirs. TE PAHU The February meeting of the Te Pahu Women’s Institute was held in the hall recently, when Mis Newland presided over a good attendance of members. Mrs Anderson was welcorned as a new member. Nominaj tions for the committee to be elected 1 in March were handed in and mat- ; ters concerning the Centennial tree : planting discussed. It was decided j that each member plant a tree at the ; hall. Mrs L. Marx, of Te Rore, gave an interesting account of a motor tour in the South Island, and her impressions of the Exhibition, for which a hearty vote of thanks was accorded her. The competition for the best bloom was won by Miss Strong with Mrs Taylor second, the award for the best zinnias going to Mrs F. Strong. The roll call, “The shop window I like best,” was readily responded to. Hostesses for the day were Mrs F. Strong, Mrs Simmons and Miss Strong. WHITIORA The Whitiora Women's Institute held its January meeting in the Y.M.C.A. There was a fair attendance of members present. Mrs D. Gate presided and welcomed all members and said she hoped all would spend a pleasant afternoon. The February meeting will be held on February 21. The annual picnic was finalised and Mrs Warren kindly consented to act as convener. The competition £cr the best bloom j was won by Mrs Smith and the trophy for the best pot of plum jam I was awarded to Mrs Mangnall. The hostesses’ competition was won by Mrs W'ebster. Afiernoon tea, served by the hostesses, brought a pleasant afternoon to a close. PI'AHUE Mrs W T . Cavanagh presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Puahue Women's Institute.
