REMARKS EXPLAINED

PETROL TAX DEFICIT NO EXTRA IMPOST THIS YEAR (By Telegraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Monday Further reference to his statement in Auckland that there would be no extra taxes this year was made by the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, today. In order that his remarks should be fully understood, the Minister pointed out that only about six weeks of the current financial year remained. He said he was asked in Auckland what was to be done to make up the deficit on the 4d a gallon petrol tax in the War Expenses Account as the result of petrol rationing. “My reply was that there would not be anything done during the present financial year,” said Mr Nash, “and I added that the determination of next year’s Budget had not been completed.”
