DEATH IN CANADA

LORD TWEEDSMUIR FAMILY AT BEDSIDE OPERATIONS FAIL {United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) MONTREAL, Feb. 11 The death has occurred of Lord Tweedsmuir, Governor-General of Canada, following the injury to his skull caused by a fall while dressing last Wednesday. Death occurred at 7.13 p.m. at the Montreal Neurological Institute, where he suffered a relapse in the forenoon. This resulted in a third operation, which lasted four hours, preceding and following which he was given blood transfusions. A pulmonary embolism, which suddenly developed after the third operation, was the immediate cause of death, according to the physicians. The doctors believed that the patient had withstood the operation well. He was the first King’s representative in Canada to die in office since the confederation. At the bedside were Lady Tweedsmuir and her son Alastair and a lady-in-waiting, also the two surgeons who performed the second and

third operations and who administered manual artificial respiration for DO minutes before the patient's death. Lady Tweedsmuir kissed the day nurse as she left the hospital weeping. Acting-Governor-General The Chief Justice of Canada, Sir Lyman Duff, has been sworn in as acting-Governor-General. and will be the King's representative until the successor to Lord Tweedsmuir arrives in about two months’ time. Lord Tweedsmuir*s term would have expired next autumn, when he intended to return to Scotland. Most prominently mentioned as the next Governor-General are the Earl of Elgin, a prominent Scottish peer, and the Duke of Devonshire, Parliamentary Under-Secret ary for the Dominions. A hundred Grenadier Guards will form the guard of honour when the body of Lord Tweedsmuir is placed in the funeral railway carriage at Montreal this morning. It will arrive in Ottawa at noon tomorrow', and will lie in state in the Senate Chamber until the State funeral the following afternoon at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, which Lord Tweedsmuir attended. The body will then be returned to Montreal for cremation, and the ashes will be buried in Scotland.
