DEATH OF “LADY GAY”
PIONEER OF JOURNALISM The death occurred recently at Christchurch of Miss Esther Glen, a pioneer in the sphere of women’s journalism in New Zealand, and widely known as the author of children’s books, states a Press Association message. As “Lady Gay,” first of the Christchurch Sun and then of the Press, Miss Glen was beloved of thousands of children throughout the province. Miss Glen first entered business life, but found time for free lance journalism and to write her first two books. About fourteen years ago Miss Glen joined the staff of the Sun to take charge of what was then the first children’s supplement in a daily newspaper in New Zealand. The year's work of her big newspaper family was directed towards the Christmas mission, by which the lives of the poorer children and lonely old people in poor circumstances were brightened at Christmas. When the Sun ceased publication, Miss Glen joined the staff of the Press, where she continued her splendid work. She died after a short illness.
