FARMERS’ UNION

MAINTENANCE OF PRODUCTION EFFECT OF ENLISTMENTS At this month’s meeting of the Te j Awamutu branch of the Farmers’ : Union, reference was made to the threat made to the maintenance of the late of production through the enlistment of farmers and farm workers of military age. It was mentioned that at a sheep fair the same day three farmers had sold i their entire flocks and were Joining ; the Forces; that many competent young farm managers were enlisting. Back-country farms w'hich were ■ partly improved and which gave em--1 ployment to many men eligible for service would be the first to suffer. ! It appeared that the military j authorities did not make sufficient ; inquiry about the men, but even if i the employers or parents objected, j the position might not improve beI cause the men would lose interest. ! The matter could not be rectified by the employers or parents for the men ! were anxious to enlist, but the rcI sponsibility was on the Government ■ which had pledged the whole of the j Dominion’s resources. That respon--1 sibility should be met by adopting ; universal service. The meeting set jup a cymmittee to investigate the j position and report. i Reference was made to the loss of 1 pigs w'hich was increasing through disease. Many farmers have suffered losses this season, and it was decided to ask the Te Awamutu Borough Council to have the salcyards 4 disinfected regularly. Resignation Approved j Approval was given to the resig--1 nation of Mr G. T. Crawley, president of the Waikato sub-provincial j executive, from the Primary Producj tion Council as the outcome of I refusal of the Government to give an I assurance that the war regulations affecting the sale of primary products would be repealed immediately J after the termination of hostilities. ,The action of the president. Mr W. G. ! Neill, in refusing to accept appointment to the Te Awamutu Recruiting Committee because of tha Government’s failure to bring in universal national service w r as also approved. 1 In commenting on the re-introduc-tion of the petrol restrictions, the president deplored the allegations that certain farmers w r ere hoarding petrol during the time between the announcement that the restriction*; were to be re-introduced and the actual date for the re-introduction. He urged that farmers should realise the emergency and do their utmost to assist.

Mr A. Bryant alleged that the restrictions had been removed to allow' townspeople to go on their holidays, but farmers would not be given the same opportunity when their holiday time came in the late autumn or winter. He asked that some provision be made to meet the case, and the matter was referred to the sub-pro-vincial executive.
