BOROUGH COUNCIL (Special to Times) MORRINSVILLE, Saturday At a recent meeting of the Morrlnsvllle Borough Council permission was granted the National Patriotic Fund Board to hold street collections in the borough on March 16 and the last week in April. A letter was received rrom the New Zealand DeTence League Inviting the council to express an opinion on the question of conscription for active service. The council decided to support the Defence League. The town clerk stated that collectable rates amounted to £9771, or which £8334 had been received. Of the £405 arrears collectable, £255 had been received. The penalty for unpaid rates would be enforced on February 15, the sum outstanding being the smallest for many years. The consulting engineer, Mr W. A. Grey, reported that he had been asked by the State Housing Department officer IT on account or the acute shortage or corrugated Iron It would be possible to substitute some other material for the purpose of The engineer recommended that totara planking be substituted, but the council derided to adhere to the terms or the contract and use iron. If Iron were unprocurable at present the reservoir would be left open.
MAGISTRATE’S COURT
At a sitting or the Magistrate’s Court at Morrlnsvllle Joe Hotene was charged before Mr W. If. Freeman. S.M., with operating a motor-cycle without a warrant or fitness, lie pleaded not guilty but later altered his plea to one or guilty and was lined 5s with co~ts 15s. N. penetito claimed £7 2s 6d damages from It. S. Knsor as a result or a collision between Knsor’s truck and Penetito's car. but plaintilT was non-suited. No costs were allowed.
MEN FOR THIRD ECHELON
The following men were passed as fit for active service at a Medical Board held at the Drill Hall, Morrlnsvllle: N. A. Dawson. 11. McCarthy. W. S. Wilson. M. R. Norrie. A. 1.. Nicholson, S. C. D'Ath, R. H. o. Passan, J. 11. GifTord, £. J. Smith, A. p. Larsen. Three others were temporarily unlit and two unfit.
