AMERICAN PRESIDENCY REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE {United Press Assn.—Flee. Tel. Copyright) WASHINGTON, Feb. 10 The name of Mr Fiorello, H. LaGuardia, Mayor of New York, has surprisingly been entered for the Illinois Republican presidential primaries. Mr LaGuardia is opposing Mr T. E. Dewey and Mr Hamilton Fish. A later message says Mr LaGuardia repudiated the entry made on his behalf. The Postmaster-General, Mr James A. Farley, has authorised the beginning of his presidential campaign in Massachusetts. AGITATOR ARRESTED (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) WASHINGTON, Feb. 10 The leader of the anti-Semitic Silver Shirt organisation, William D. Pelley, was arrested at the conclusion of a week’s testimony before the Dies Committee, on a charge of violating the proviso requiring good behaviour in a suspended gaol sentence imposed in North Carolina for stock frauds. The committee accused Pelley of “ fulsomely praising Hitler and advocating a dictatorship, Vigilantism and the segregation of Jews.” INDIAN FRONTIER (United Press Assn.—Klee. Tel. Copyright; DELHI, Feb. 10 It is officially stated that the Government is reinforcing the regular troops and civil armed defences in the frontier districts of Bannu and Kohat and is constructing temporary posts in hilly country. The Shabi Khel, the only remaining tribe on the north-west frontier which was hostile to the Government, has made peace and furnished cash securities. ARRESTED COMMUNIST (United Press Assn.—Elec. Copyright) LONDON, Feb. 10 The Trades Council has passed a resolution protesting against the French Government’s action in imprisoning the Communist secretary of the Paris Trades Council, Henri Renaud. This was described as political persecution. AMERICAN LABOUR I (United Press Assn.—Elec Tel. Copyright) WASHINGTON, Fob. 10 | The loader of the Committee for , Industrial Organisation. Mr John : Lewis, advocated today that the American Federation of Labour should absorb his organisation by granting charters to all its unions. Ho proposed that a joint convention be held at Washington on March 15 1m vote on the proposal. He said he was nut a candidate for any office.
