BONNIEDENE WINS DERBY

THREE BELLS TRIUMPHS RAILWAY TO TSANA M. STEWART’S GOOD DAY The Takanini trainer, F. J. Smith, and M. Stewart, of Te Rapa, shared driving honours at Epsom on Saturday, when the former won the Great Northern Trotting Derby with Bonniedene from Stewart’s representative. Crucible, and took the honours in the opening event with Josedale Dictator. Stewart drove Tsana to victory in the Railway Handicap and later was successful with Grand Dame, a recent addition to the stable, in the Mount Albert Handicap. Great Surprise was made a hot favourite Jn the February Handicap, and never pave his supporters any qualms until the last furlong was entered upon, when he tired badly and was all out In walking past the post ro vtctoiy. Roi Grande, the second horse. raced prominently throughout, but he also had had enough by the time the winning post was reached. It xvas virtually a four-horse race, as over the first round Esther led by about a length and a-half from Great Surprise, with Roi Grande and Stalky handy at least ten lengths clear or the next horse, Elissa. who, like Gay Moko. had failed to go away properly. Stalky at this stage was going strongly on the outside of Roi Grande two lengths behind Esther and lie appeared to be a probability until lie broke almost immediately afterwards. Great Surprise then went to the front and there xvas very litile between him and Esther and Roi Grande as they raced across the ton and into the straight. There was no change in the run to the post. She was always one of the leaders and Stewart, driving confidently, did not give her her head until the straight was reached. She then went on to win easily.
