SWIMMING CONTESTS HEATS IN SEVERAL EVENTS WATER POLO MATCHES (By Telesraph.—Press Association) WELLINGTON, Saturday The New Zealand amateur swimming championships opened at Riddiford Baths, Lower Hutt, this morning before a fair attendance. The temperature of the water was 65 deg. and the weather was overcast for most of the morning. Results:— Men’s 100 yards.—First heat: P. Hanan (Auckland) 1, J. T. Clark (Wellington) 2. H. G. Goldsmith (Canterbury), 3: four feet, touch; time, 56 4-5. Second heat: R. Hatchwell (Wellington) 1. J. Whiti (Bay of Plenty) 2. D. H. Symes (Canterbury) 3; length, foot: time. 56 1-5. Men’s 220 yards Breaststroke.— First heat: H. Dyson (Otago) 1. K. Shaw (Southland) 2. K. Spry (Wellington) 3; length: time. 3min. 1 3-5 sec. Second heat: S. Thomson (Hawke’s 'Bay) 1. M. Shannahan (Auckland) 2. R. Geddes (Otago) 3: length. Robertson (Wellington) finished third, but was disqualified. Geddes was well back. Time, 3min 13 l-ssec. A scratch 100 yards freestyle was held to decide who would fill the last position in the Wellington flying squadron. It was won by E. A. Raven in 62secs. Water Polo Championship.—Wellington B and Canterbury drew, no score.
