AMATEUR ATHLETICS

HAMILTON CLUB ACTIVITIES

DRESSING ACCOMMODATION BOROUGH COUNCIL’S DECISION (By “Nurmi”) Considerable pleasure will be tell among members of the Hamilton Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club, and the public generally, at the announcement that the Borough Council and the Domain Board have finally decided to erect suitable dressing accommodation at Kineinoa Park. For some time now these bodies have been aware of the conditions at this ground, and the shed and conveniences proposed will be a welcome relief to the present intolerable position. It is hoped to have the buildings erected for a monster interhouse and open sports carnival, under electric light, on Wednesday, March 13. Club Evening Meetings With the Saturdays all heavily booked right to the end of the season, Hamilton club activities will now be conducted on Wednesday evenings, commencing at 6 p.m. The intended visit of certain members of outside clubs will give added interest tc these weekly meetings. Poser For Selectors The Waikato championships rule limiting the competitors to three from each club in each event must have presented some selectors with difficulties, but few can compare with the task of the Hamilton selectors (Messrs Joyes and Thompson) in selecting the pole vault team. The leading quartette, Ferguson, Alker, Bradey and Johnson, rarely finish in the same order. Sometimes one is in brilliant form and one below par; next meeting the reverse is the case. In the circumstances the selectors appear to have fallen back on the rule allowing the separate nomination of the titleholder (in this case Bradey), and the ether three form the official team. It is quite on the cards that Bradey may retain his title, in which case he would not count for points and the second, third and fourth competitors would count 5, 3 and 1 in the usual way.

Relay Championships Saturday next brings us to the Auckland provincial relay championships at Carlaw Park, Auckland. The Hamilton club, holders of the Kohn Shield (symbolic of inter-club supremacy) for the past two seasons, will journey north to defend their trophy. Should the best teams be available, the black-and-golds will certainly be difficult to keep off the “hat trick.” Fourth Waikatos

That popular meeting, the Old Fourth Waikatos, held annually at Steele Park, is set down for Saturday, March 9. “Nurmi” will supply more details later. Kaipaki Dubious?

The unsettled conditions overseas, coupled with the more effective petrol restrictions locally, have combined to make more than one athletic club executive go very carefully in the matter of open meetings. One such club is Kaipaki, which commenced activities with an excellent gathering late last season. While not wishing to push the Kaipaki committee into a hasty decision, “Nurmi” would point out that since the petj rol restrictions have been imposed ; clubs such as Hamilton, Paeroa and j Morrinsville are attending sports i meetings per bus, thus ensuring i plenty of athletes. The only mat- : ter requiring consideration at KaiI paki is the attendance of the public, i Bearing in mind the suggested date of this meeting (March 16), an early | announcement is anticipated.
