" SPRINGTIME ” Springtime is a merry time, A merry time is Spring. The little birds come out for straws, They build, and hop, and sing. The daffodils and crocuses Spread out their golden heads. Sweet cowslips hang their scented bells Above the golden beds. The cherry trees are white with flowers, The apple trees are pink. The green leaves, wrapped in woolly buds, Peep out at you, and wink. LILAC I d never sit and grumble Or ponder or complain, I’d never breathe a whisper Of discontent again. If I could leave this city For some green-tunnel lane. And smell the scent of lilac In gardens after rain. THE FAIRY IN THE DELL I saw a fairy in the dell, She had a crown and a wand as well; As she touched each flower I think she said, “ It’s time for flowers to go to bed.” As each one shut up close and tight, I think each whispered, “ Dear, goodnight.” A FAIRY SEAMSTRESS When a fairy seamstress Sews by the day, She brings a work basket Fitted for her stay: Needles from a pine tree, Pins of polished thorn. A thimbleberry thimble And sewing silk of corn. But when her work is over. Finished coats and caps. There comes a little field mouse To gather up the scraps: Bits of mullein velvet. All the tiny snippets. She saves to make her children Nice warm tippets.
