IMPORTANT UNRESERVED DISPERSAL SALE of WAITORU STUD ROMNEYS (Regd. Flock No. 1206 N.Z. R.M.F.B ■< Practically pure Waiorongomai blood). On account of the Estate Late Sir W. D. Hunt and Mr W. E. Hunt, at WAITORU DOWNS, near Dacre, ■ Southland, N.Z., on WEDNESDAY, 21st February, 1940. 2050 This offering will comprise—--1150 mixed aged Stud Romney ewes 430 one-shear Stud Romney ewes 25 one-shear Stud Romney rams 20 mixed age Stud Romney rams 40 two-shear Flock Romney rams 360 one-shear Flock Romney rams 25 specially selected stud ram lambs | 2050 j N.B.—The remainder of the ram ! lambs and the whole of the stud ewe | lambs will be offered for sale with- ! out reserve In 1941. j THE WAITORU ROMNEY STUD was re-established in 1923 with a I special selection of the best quality | stud ewes yet soia out of the famous j i “Waiorongomai” (Mr R. W. Mat- ! thews) and “Alloa” (Mr Q. Donald) Hocks, and another selection from the same ilocks were secured the folj lowing year. Additions of specially | selected ewes have been made anj nually from "Waiorongomai.” Ewes j were also secured from Mr Donald Macdonald’s “Edendale” flock, which was built up largely from the old J “Bainfield” (almost pure “Waio- i rongomai” blood) flock and at the j dispersal sale of Messrs Murray Bros.’ j “Clydevale” flock and the “Castle- j rock” flock (Trustees late T. L. Barn- ' hill). As “Waiorongomai” blood j predominated in all these studs, the “Waitoru” stud can be said today to j be practically pure “Waiorongomai” j blood. The first sires used in the stud were secured from “Waiorongo- ! mai” and included the great breeding ram Waiorongomai 25/28, a son of j the famous sire No. 4/21. This ram I sired Waitoru 13/30, generally admit- ■ ted by leading North Island judges I who have inspected the flock to be i one of the best breeding rams in the ! Dominion. His dam was an Alloa I ewe of pure "Waiorongomai” blood, i After being used with great success j at “Waitoru” for six years, this ram { was exchanged for one of the leading I sires at “Waiorongomai” and is now |in service there. Several other sons of 25/23 have also been successfully used, and many notable sons of Waitoru 13/30 have also been used successfully in the stud, thus to a very ■ great extent concentrating No. 4 blood. The type of sheep bred in the stud are bold, low set. splendid constitutioned sheep with great weight of bone and ideal covering. Buyers therefore have the opportunity of securing at this sale Romneys representing the best North Island type, but with the heavier bone and greater vitality for which Southlandbred sheep are so widely famous. It is worth noting that stud rams exported from this stud to South ( America have given the utmost satisfaction. From the point of view of the Romney breed in Southland . it is a tremendous loss that this stud, due to the death of the late Sir William Hunt, should now be dispersed. Last year there was commenced the ; first of what was intended to be annual sales of the stud and flock rams, and these attracted widespread at- | tention. In addition to local buyers, j stud rams were purchased by Sir William Perry, of the Penrose Stud, I Mr R. W. Matthews, of the WaioI rongomai Stud, and for the Alloa i ] Stud of the late Quentin Donald. As | the result of the sale, “Waitoru” flock ! rams were also distributed over a j wide area of the Dominion and have ! given satisfaction wherever they have j gone. No private sales will be made prior to the dispersal and all sheep , will be for unreserved sale. This sale affords many breeders an opportunity to secure almost pure j I “Waiorongomai” breeding stock ; | which is almost unprocurable from J | the foundation flock. 1 For catalogues and further informj ation please communicate with the auctioneers.
