AUCKLAND MEETING

SIXTEEN IN CHIEF EVENT WAIKATO HORSES ENGAGED PROSPECTS REVIEWED (By “Padlock”) Good fields are carded for the opening day of the Auckland Trotting Club's February meeting tomorrow. tiie feature of the day being the contest for the Great Northern Centenary Trotting Derby. The big handicap has drawn sixteen acceptors and the sprint twelve runners. Following are the fields with a review of the prospects:— 12.0

| OiLthose off the front none makes ; greater appeal than the improving ! Sophy Bingen and she is sure to go | well. Barney Bingen is a con- | sistent type and the winning form of | Mali Jong will claim her a following j on the machines. Worthy Worker is | a solid trotter and his early brilliance I should stand to him on the day. Oi' j the others the best would appear to ! be Frontier Boy. The elect may I be— WORTHY WORKER MAH JONG SOPHY BINGEN 12.45 WAIHEKE HANDICAP

! Brilliant Globe will need only to j i go away on terms with the field to t j possess good prospects, while the | same may also be said of Magic Task, | who is somewhat unreliable, at the I barrier. Northern Smile has been shaping well in recent trials and Parrish Queen, Neon Oro and Kewpie’s Bingen are all liable to race | prominently. Sweet Aloes has been shaping most encouraging in recent essays and she may prove one of the hardest to dispose of. The favourites may include— SWEET ALOES BRILLIANT GLOBE NORTHERN SMILE 1.30 GREAT NORTHERN CENTENARY TROTTING DERBY or £500; three-year-olds; l* miles Auto Lad Charon Barbara Scott Charles Rex Crucible Bonnledene Auto Lad, Charon and Barbara Scott have much to commend them on the score of breeding but there are others that will be preferred. Bonniedene’s win and several placings this season suggest a good chance for her and she appeals as being the hardest to beat. Charles Rex is on the improve, while Crucible, a recent addition to M. Stewart's stable, who was placed at HuL Park last week, should make a bold showing. The prime fancies may be— CRUCIBLE EONNIEDENE

Three strong combinations are engaged in the chief event, Bold Venture and Tangatu, Fortex and Red Flush and Three Bells and Isobel Derby. Bold Venture has been showing good form recently and Tangatu was placed at Hutt Park last week. Fortex is a fine stayer and should account for Red Flush, while the consistency of Three Bells will assure him a following. Parauri appears to be on the upgrade and Peter Smith has been working attractively. Ringtrue, Sir Frank and Star Pronto are possibilities, as also is Francisco, if produced. Kewpie’s King, Our McKinney and Our Peggy would be assisted by a heavy track, but indications are the public may prefer the credentials of— FORTEX—RED FLUSH bracket PARAURI THREE BELLS—ISOBEL DERBY bracket 3.5

I The successful Te Rapa trainer. I M. Stewart, holds a strong hand in ! Belfast Jack and Tsana and the j combination may prove hard to beat. ! Kete Kura is on the upgrade ana | other likely improvers include Sil—l ver Watch and Forest Jewel. Of i the others the best may be Hillcrest, j Isabella Pointer. Llanvabon, Bronze ! Queen, Lynn Rey and Transwell. ; There should be good support forth- ! coming for — BELFAST JACK BRONZE QUEEN LLANVABON 3.50 FEBRUARY HANDICAP or £25 0; trot tors; limit 3.:::; 14 miles j .... I I. yds bin ! Kstlier . . . l.t. Stalky ... 3! , yds blicl Hoi Grande . . 3-', | Audo Patch . . 2 L Gay Moko . . 6 ) Great surprise . -2 1 Waikato Prince 132 | If only she kept her feet Elissa I would set the opposition a stiff task ' but she is rather unreliable in this

respect. Esther may be seen to better advantage here than was the case at Epsom over Christmas. Audo Patch has prospects and the consistent Greta Surprise will have a firm following. Stalky’s chances will be enhanced in the event of a soft track obtaining and the form of Roi Grand at the summer gathering points to his taking a hand in the finish. Gay Moko is a prospect but Waikato Prince will have a difficult task from 132yds. The public may prefer— GREAT SURPRISE ROI GRAND STALKY 4.35 MOUNT ALBERT HANDICAP

Cavalryman is a strong possibility off the front and Excel, Kitty’s Choice, Novikoff and Repose are not without a chance. Grand Dame has been working well and may be seen to better ad\-antage here, while the improving Albertini may prove the hardest to dispose of. Radio Queen is a likely improver, while Silk Lady, Llewellyn’s Pet and John’s Last should all add interest to a race in which the final figures may fa\ r our the chances of— CAVALRYMAN ALBERTINI GRAND DAME 5.20

Four of the twelve runners are engaged earlier in the day, these being Bold Venture, Tangatu, Sir Frank and Peter Smith. As earlier in the day, Bold Venture and Tangatu form a strong combination, while another dangerous pair are Lady Vasclyne and Shrewdy from the Kenner ley stable. Munga Tangi and Vanora are a likely pair of improvers, but Francisco should account for them. Great Chum is a strong possibility and the betting lists may be headed by— LADY VASCLYNE—SHREWDY bracket FRANCISCO BOLD VENTURE—TANGATU bracket.
