FINE FIELDS ENGAGED

OPENING OF NEW COURSE

FIFTEEN IN CLP EVENT PROSPECTS UNDER REVIEW (By “Martian”) The annual meeting of the Rotorua Racing Club, which will mark the opening of the new course and appointments at Arawa Park, will oe ushered in tomorrow when the large fields engaged should ensure a highly successful meeting. Fifteen have accepted for the Rotorua Cup, while in the sprint, the Tourist Handicap, the material is there for a fine betting race. Betting will be under the win and place principle. Following are the fields with a review of the prospects. 12.15 POHUTU HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP

Haile Boy has been showing encouraging form in hurdle ccmpany in recent weeks and, like Midland, should make a bold showing over the distance, Starbright has been working well and Australian Star, who won the Pirongia Cup on Boxing Day, has indicated by the quality of his recent work that he may prove one of the hardest to dispose of. Erination should appreciate his 9.2 and is quite capable of effecting a surprise. Diversity is a good track worker and Stokowski, who showed early brilliance in the Tirau Hurdles at Matamata last week, should make a bold showing in the class. The best supported may be— HAILE BOY ERINATION STOKOWSKI 12.55

British Isles may be improved with racing at Matamata, where Misora showed early brilliance in leading the field for over half-a-mile. The latter is handily placed and slight improvement in stamina would give her a chance. Herbage is speedy and Pleuron is capable of better things than Matamata running would indicate. Bronze Spear, Miss Ridicule and Commemoration are not without a chance, but Surtoy, Glenbevan and Merry Vaals should account for them. Merry Vaals, especially has been racing consistently but unluckily of late and should be the hardest to dispose of in a race in which a fancied trio may be found among— MERRY VAALS HERBAGE MISORA 1.35 MOKOIA HACK HANDICAP

A number of useful hack sprinters are engaged here and it promises to be a fine race. Sir Robin won at his last start at Thames and on that running must be dangerous, while Penzance, a disappointment in recent starts, would have a chance if she produced her best. Town Section won attractively at Matamata and though his task will be more difficult on this occasion he appeals, nevertheless, as being one of the hardest to dispose of. Valerian, Pasture, who has been working well, Trig Station and Herbage are the best of the others in a race in which the prime fancies may include— TOWN SECTION SIR ROBIN TRIG STATION 2.20

King Rey has been racing consistently and will be bracketed with another useful performer in Greek Queen, whose last four starts have yielded a first, two seconds and a third. The combination should command respect. Lady Montana’s fourth in the Summer Handicap at Trentham held promise of early retribution, while Jack Tar’s Matamata form draws attention to his claims. Erlick may be a better proposition than Namara. He won well at Matamata and will strip in great heart for racing at the fixture. Te Hai, Brazilian and Saccone all possess chances but, at the weights, few make greater appeal than Cornish. Ke has been working stylishly and his winning form of Christmas and more recently at the mid-summer meeting at Ellerslie points strongly to his claims. Raceline may improve but a favoured selection may be— CORNISH ERLICK KING REY—GREEK QUEEN bracket

HOT SPRINGS HANDICAP

Several of those entered here claim dual engagements. Hunter’s Rose won well on the first day at Thames, where Trig Station also performed creditably. Estro has good form over the holidays, while Ngawiri, who was not suited by the heavy nature of the going at Matamata. may be seen to better advantage on this occasion. Merry Vaals, Fairfield and Acreman are all likely to improve on form at Matamata and they will carry their lull measure of support. The elect of investors may be— HUNTER'S ROSE MERRY VAALS NGAWIRI 4.35

Money ... 8 2 May Song disclosed encouraging form at Thames and Kaspian’s useful third to Town Section and Sir Lysander at Matamata suggested early improvement. Starbright has good prospects and Town Section, if reserved, will keep the opposition fully alive to his presence. First Gold Money won well over the distance at Thames and a reproduction of that form would see him right up at the finish. Nyola, Surtoy and Karatoki should hold the balance safe. When the final figures are balanced there should be good supsupport forthcoming for (in the absence of Town Section) FIRST GOLD MONEY MAY SONG KASPIAN 4.30 ARAWA PARK STAKES HANDICAP

The speedy Sir Lj r sander went a good race last week in running Town Section to a tight decision and he should go well again. Heroic Maid and Phil Vaals are good prospects, while Fairfield, Valsome, Lady Bloater and Bronze Bird are entitled lo their measure of support. Surpai is speedy and may surprise, but the better proposition may be Gold Money Song, winner of the first division of the Putaruru Stakes last Saturday at Matamata. At that meeting another to claim attention was the two-year-old Silveyor, who but for swinging very wide at the turn may have carried the day. It should be an interesting race with preference likely to be extended— GOLD MONEY SONG SILVEYOR SIR LYSANDER 5.15 TOURIST HANDICAP or £300; 6 l'urs.

Yalimeen ..70 Penzance ..77 The open sprint should provide a fine contest. Farland’s best performance this season was his close second to Orwere at Te Rapa but he indicated by his forward running for six furlongs in the Cup at Matamata that he may soon be seen in winning vein again. Lornacre may be hard to beat if the track is reasonably firm and Sunola’s New Year form gives him a chance. Corato may improve and Tosh, who has been working well, may soon be seen to better advantage. Trilliarch, Gamos and Konneta are possibilities and the Matamata running of Noitaro held promise of early improvement. Penzance should hold the others safe. In a good betting race a well-supported combination may be— SUNOLA FARLAND TOSH
