Cinema .. •

Snapshots

George Sanders, whose portrayal* on the screen have created an insistent demand for his services in Hollywood, nevertheless went to England to play the leading role of ‘‘Ragatzy’ in Dorothy Brandon’s controversial story, “The Outsider,” in which Australian Mary Maguire plays the role ol the cripple girl Lalage. Sanders went to England to play this role, because, to use his own words: ”1 was intrigued by the characterisation of this Ragatzy who aroused the enmity of the orthodox medical profession by his lack of degrees, and felt the role would be something a little out of the ordin- “ Believe me,” he added, ‘‘l thoroughly enjoyed playing the part.” In spite of his talent, it was only by the merest chance that Sanders entered this field. Before he got his break he never even considered acting as a profession. Born in Russia, Sanders had to flee that country when just a boy during the Revolution. His family took him to England, where he followed a formal English education, with the idea in mind of embracing a life of scientific study. Circumstances, however, prevented him from completing his academic work, and he got a job as a shipping clerk, which he gave up later to become a tax collector.

Voice Made Opening Although he has never been heard to sing in any of his films, he is the possessor of a delightful voice, and it was his vocal prowess that actually got him his start in motion pictures. He was at a party one night and was asked to sing. The producer of a musical show happened to be present, was impressed, and gave him a role in his production, which launched him on a theatrical career.

He was an instantaneous success. After several brilliant English musical comedy successes, Sanders felt that he could make good at Hollywood. He snatched the first opportunity that came his way to go to the film capital, where his ability was immediately recognised. Now he is one of the most soughtafter male stars of the screen.

In Hollywood, Sanders is very much the recluse. He will tell you he prefers sleeping beyond all else.

But since his first Hollywood success in “Lloyds of London,” he has been kept busier than he finds conducive to rest.
