INDECENT ASSAULT
ROTORUA MAN IN COURT REMANDED FOR SENTENCE Having pleaded guilty in the lower court to a charge of indecent assualt, Albert Haydn Shirley, aged 52, labourer, of Rotorua, appeared before Mr Justice Blair in the Supreme Court, Hamilton, today for sentence. There were two charges against Shirley, both offences having taken place at Rotorua, one on or about January 3 and the other on January 27. A plea for leniency on behalf of the prisoner was made by Major A. Bartlett, of the Salvation Army, Hamilton, who said that up to the time of the lapse Shirley bore a splendid record. A returned soldier who had a good service record, he had taken an active part in church work. If leniency were extended it would be appreciated, and the Salvation Army would help to bring the man back on to the right path. His Honour said he ,was impressed with the man’s record, which showed that he had been actively engaged in social work. There were some aspects of the matter which needed very earnest consideration. The prisoner was remanded until this afternoon to allow the matter to be discussed.
On the resumption of the Court this afternoon Shirley was further remanded until Monday morning.
