FAT STOCK SALES DROP IN BEEF PRICES GOOD DEMAND FOR SHEEP AUCKLAND, Wednesday Yardings at the Westfield fat stock sales yesterday were average ones of good quality. A heavy yarding of cows and heifers did not meet with such keen competition as last week and prices eased. Quotations dropped by Is per 1001 b. Top price for steers was £ls, compared with £l4 15s at the last sale. Cows and heifers sold to £9 7s 6d, against £9 15s. A large entry of sheep met with keen and steady competition. Wethers made to 26s 3d and ewes to 20s. Last week’s best prices were 27s and 23s respectively. Full late rates were realised for an average yarding of lambs. With brisk bidding for pigs, all classes sold readily at very firm values. For porkers the best offer was £3 ss, the same as last week. Top price for baconers was also unaltered at £4 Bs. Averages remained the same at from 64d to 6£d per lb for baconers, and from 6fd to 7£d per lb for porkers. Calves of good quality were yarded in average numbers. Runners sold to £8 13s, against £B. Vealers made to £5 12s, the same as last week. Comparison of Quotations The following is a summary of the prices realised for fat stock for the last two weeks at the Westfield fat

Top price for steers was £ls, made by a consignment from Mr B. Reed, Waerenga, while a line from Mr G. Vosper, Cambridge, brought to £l4 17s 6d. A lot from Mr R. Bell, Pukekawa, brought to £ll ss, and steers from Mr C. G. Orr, Tuakau, sold to £ll 2s 6d. Up to £9 7s 6d was paid for a consignment of cows and heifers from Mr A. Main, Tamahere. Cattle from Mr H. Windsor, Tamahere, sold to £8 15s. To £8 7s 6d was made by a lot from Mr A. Batty, Motumaoho, while consignments from Mr W. Main, Tirau, and Mr A. I. Batty, Morrinsville brought to £8 ss. Dalgety and Company, Ltd. We had a big yarding, which sold under keen competition, and our quotations are firm on last week for all classes. Heavy prime wethers, 24s 6d to 25s 3d; medium, 23s 6d to 24s 3d; light, 22s to 235; plain and unfinished wethers, 21s to 21s 9d; heavy prime young and maiden ewes, 19s to 20s; heavy prime ewes, 18s to 18s 9d; lighter, 16s to 17s 6d; plain and aged ewes, 10s to 15s. Lambs.—An average entry sold freely at full late rates. Medium prime lambs, 21s to 22s 9d; lighter, 19s 6d to 20s 6d; light, 18s to 19s; small and plain lamb, 16s to 17s 6d. Calves were yarded in full numbers, the quality being first-class. At the commencement of the sale there was a firm demand, but this slackened as the sale progressed, and in the later stages values were considerably lower.
