CHRISTMAS VERSES
CHRISTMAS GREETING Every milestone on the way While the year is fleeting, Brings us nearer Christmas Day With its kindly greeting. Sweet remembrance is a shrine At this happy season; Finding still in Auld Lang Syne All sufficient reason. So a friendly wish we send, Health and welfare stressing; May the coming milestone blend Christmas joy and blessing. CHRISTMAS GIFTS I wonder what I’m getting From Santa Claus this year ? A pram ? A lovely china doll ? Or a great big teddy bear ? I believe I’d like a doll’s house, With a knocker on the door, And curtains tied with ribbons And carpets on the floor. And I think I’ll have a cradle For poor old Mary Claire. I’ve had her quite a while now, And she’s getting worse for wear. But now I’m getting greedy, And so on second thought I’ll be a good girl, Santa, And just take what you’ve got! —E.M.
CHRISTMAS SMILES Christmas smiles are breaking Through the winter haze, Memories awaking Of happy holidays. Every face is beaming, Giving out good cheer. Every heart is dreaming Of dear ones, far and near. Christmas hearts are lifting From a year of strain, From life’s uncertain drifting To peace on earth again. The Guiding Star brings healing Where sorrow left a thorn, The joyous rays revealing The truth of love newborn. Then let us keep on smiling Throughout the coming days, Through future years, beguiling The world from wicked ways. Let nations, free from brawling, Join hearts in work and play, The Christmas message calling— Peace on earth for aye. —Maud Mallet CHRISTMAS EYE There’s a bustle in the kitchen, There’s laughter on the stair, There’s mistletoe and holly And parcels everywhere. A turkey in the pantry, A postman at the door, A cake inside the cupboard, A tree stands on the floor. Why all this great commotion ? You’ve guessed it, I believe— We’re ALL so very busy, Because it’s Christmas E\ r e! —Gwladys Roberts
