ELLERSLIE EVENTS

FINE FIELDS ENGAGED CATALOGUE’S CUP CHANCES PROSPECTS UNDER REVIEW . Large and well-balanced fields have come forward for the opening day of the Auckland Racing Club’s Summer carnival at Ellerslie and there is every indication for racing of a highly interesting standard. Both the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap bear an open aspect ana fancies will assume a generous range. Following are the fields with a review of the prospects:— 11.45

The consistent Proud Fox appeals as the logical contender for honours in the opening event and certainly on the way he finished at Te Awamutu recently he is justly entitled to every consideration. Meadow and Foxsen are a likely pair from Te Rapa and both have been working well, while of the others the best would appear to be Buccaneer and White Foam, who were seen to advantage at Whangarei, Native Chief, a winner at both starts this season, Millament and Serenata. The favourites may be— PROUD FOX SERENATA NATIVE CHIEF

Clarion Call has been schooling brilliantly and will need only to be himself on the day to take a power of beating. Ureklaw's recent record draws attention to his prospects and the recent track form of Mio Lume suggests he is coming back to his best again. The improving Hopalong should account for the balance the best of whom may be Lapidarian. A well-supported trio may include— MIO LUME CLARION CALL UREKLAW 1.20 GREAT NORTHERN FOAL STAKES Or £1000; two-year-olds; colts and gelding's, 8.10; allies 8.5; 6 furs.

Beau Leon has been working well as also has Cheddington, who is expected to show good form at the meeting. Cillas won at his only start at Whangarei and the latest track essays of Grandora point to his making a forward showing. Kentucky has been out of the money only once in seven starts and his consistency commends his claims. Lou Rosa’s Te Rapa form and that of Phaleron at Avondale and Ellerslie will claim them support. Doria’s fine record will make her hard to beat, while of the others Ringcraft, Stratford, Worton, Harmony and Queen City appeal most. There should be good support for— DORIA QUEEN CITY LOU ROSA

Volee ... 7 9 The Cup field of 1939 has drawn a well-balanced field and indications are for a stirring contest. Catalogue, who claims among his notable achievements a Melbourne Cup, has the credentials to commend him and he is assured of a strong following. Golden Sheila has been showing signs of soreness over the past week. Flood Tide is coming back to form and like King Rey, Sly Fox, Llangollen and Royevrus, must be considered. Balinavar is a consistent performer but may not appeal as much as Dictate and The Cardinal. The likeliest of the others may be Fils de Vaals and Pern. The betting lists may be headed by— CATALOGUE DICTATE FLOOD TIDE

Bronze Moth has been racing well this season and Anion and Silver Stick are a pair of likely improvers who are sure to make their presence felt. Spinning Wheel is on the upgrade and the form of Perillus at Avondale points to his claims. Sir Robin, Pasture, Cornish, Flying Vixen, Wyndora and Omapo will all add interest in a race in which the prime fancies may be— WYNDORA CORNISH

Odtaa has been racing well, and is sure to go a solid race, while Great Swoop, Penzance and Starbright are a likely trio with a chance. Tea Gong won stylishly at Auckland last month and indications are he will be one of the favourites. Tellsom, Gay Movie and Indian Sun appeal over the others in a race in which there should be strong inquiry for— TEA GONG PENZANCE

Suleiman should be all the better for racing and Orate will need only to give of his best to be hard to beat. Paper Slipper has prospects and Farland is in the right condition to make his presence felt. Disdain’s Riccarton form will claim her a firm following and the fact that she has since been working well will increase her circle of admirers. The brilliance of Our Jean at Te Awamutu the other day should see her prominently placed at the business end and she will need only to go away on terms with the field io take a power of beating. Orelio is another brilliant sprinter and the track form of Arvakur on Thursday will claim him a following. Blonde Princess and Foxmond are lightweight prospects in a race in which the elect may be— OUR JEAN DISDAIN ORELIO

The form of Calula Boy at Ellerslie last month points to his prospects and he appeals as being one of the hardest to beat. Happicoat, too, was in winning vein at Auckland last

month and possesses good prospects, while likely improvers in Horeke, Gold Money Song, Marshall Hall, Worton, Mysito, Gay Miss, Lady Bloater, Belle Femme and Money Spinner will claim a measure of support. The public may prefer the credentials of—

Homily indicated a return to her best at the recent Waikato meeting while Paddy the Rip will need only to be himself on the day to take a hand in the issue. The Riccarton form of Moorsotis was impressive and Baran and Kathbella have the requisite credentials for consideration.
