Legal Vacation The summer vacation for the legal profession in Hamilton will begin on Saturday of next week, and the offices will resume on January 15. The Court office will close next Friday and will re-open on Thursday, January 4.

Killer W’hale’s Carcase The carcase of the killer whale which was foimd dead on a sandbank in the Auckland Harbour near Point Chevalier is to be handed to the Auckland Museum authorities for mounting and exhibition. After the removal of the carcase to a suitable location, a plaster mould of the body will be taken in three sections. It will then be carefully dissected and the bones scraped and cleaned, a task that will occupy a considerable time.

Big Housing Block Plans by the Government Housing Department for a large housing block on the Great North Road, Auckland, adjoining the Oakley Creek, have been submitted to the City Council. The land has an area of 56i acres, and of this five acres have been set aside as a school site, six acres are streets, 32 acres building sites and 13 a acres reserve. It is proposed to subdivide into 154 lots, of which 36 are for two-unit houses, making 190 units. The coumcil approved the plan, subject to certain small amendments.

Valuable Gift Mr C. F. Goldie, the well-known artist, has made a valuable gift to the Auckland Art Gallery. He intimated to the City Council last night that it was his wish to present to the gallery, in memory of his mother, two studies of Maoris, entitled “ A Hundred Years Have Passed ” and “ Reverie.” Mr Goldie said he valued these pictures at 250 guineas each and he was prepared to provide the inscription. The Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, moved that the pictures be accepted with grateful thanks and an expression of the city’s appreciation of Mr Goldie’s further generosity to the Art Gallery be conveyed to the donor. The Mayor 3dded that the pictures would be immensely valuable to posterity. The motion was carried.
