CHILLED CATTLE
WAIKATO SHOW ENTRIES JUDGING ON HOOKS FAVOURABLE COMMENTS MADE Very favourable comment on the chiller steers shown at the Waikato Centennial Show was made by the judge after he had judged the carcases on the hooks at the Horotiu Works of the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company. The cattle were of extremely good quality, he said, and the weights were suitable for the best export chilling standard. The 25 head of chiller steers were purchased by Messrs Shattock Ltd. by arrangement with the show' executive. The cattle were killed at the works on Monday. The results of the hooks judging was as follows: Class 87, one steer most suitable for chilled beef trade. Borthwick Cup and Miniature: lan Finlayson 1, W. Dinniss 2, R. A. Mansell 3, Mrs W. S. Goosman 4, H. and S. Rhodes 5 (No. 19). The results at the show (Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Co’s. Cup) were: H. and S. Rhodes (No. 17) 1, Mrs W. S. Goosman 2, lan Finlayson 3, R. J. Church 4, H. J. Finlayson 5. Class 88: District group of 4 chiller steers, Te Rapa I. At the show the Paterangi group was placed first. Class 86: Heifer, suitable for chilling (W. and R. Fletcher Cup): H. Windsor 1, H. J. Finlayson 2, A. Main 3. At the show: H. Windsor 1, A. Main 2, H. J. Finlayson 3. Judge s Comments In commenting on Mr lan Finlayson’s winning beast (609 lb) in tne steer class, the judge said it was an outstanding beast for finish and conformation. It had the quality which would command the attention of the English judges. Mr W. Dinnis’ second-prize entry (608 lb.) was of very similar type and quality. Its only fault was a slight weakness in the loin.
Although rather light, Mr R. A. Mansell’s third prize entry (563 lb.) had splendid quality and on this account could not be overlooked. Mrs W. S. Goosman’s fourth prize steer (751 lb.) was very meaty for its weight, but heavy in the fore-end. But for a slight bruise, Messrs H. and S. Rhodes’ fifth prize chiller was a very good beast. The winner at the show, said the judge, had nice type but quartered rather fat for the market requirements.
