POTATO PRICES SOAR
SHORTAGE IN SOUTHLAND (Special to Times) INVERCARGILL, Wednesday Potato prices in Invercargill are reported to be the highest that have ever ruled in the city, and in some cases they are said to represent a 500 per cent increase on the values being asked for wholesale lines at this time last year. Wholesale stocks are negligible and neither merchants nor growers have any large supplies on hand. Consequently there is no possibility of the shortage being relieved until the arrival of new potatoes from the north. The first of these are expected to arrive within a fortnight. Growers with small supplies available are able to command their own prices within reason and retailers have had to pay as much as 27s 6d for a 1121 b bag of table potatoes. In November, 1938, the wholesale price of a 1401 b bag was about ss. Two years ago potatoes were in fairly short supply in Invercargill and prices rose to about 14s a bag. but it is believed that at no time have values been as high as at present.
