THEFT OF FUNDS

UNION SECRETARY CONFESSES (Special to Times) GISBORNE, Wednesday Walking into the police station recently, a union secretary, Vincent Anthony Hogan, aged 26, confessed to the theft of sums of money from the funds of the Gisborne Freezing Workers’ Union. He appeared in the Police Court this morning and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Accused pleaded guilty to the theft of £B2, the property of the union. John Gartshore Robertson, treasurer of the union, said accused had been secretary for two years and had been paid a salary of £2 a week. A check had been made of accused’s receipts and the present position was that the secretary had received £414, of which £B2 remained unaccounted for.

Detective-Sergeant R. H. Watersort said that on October 25 accused called at the police station and told him that he wished to confess that he had been stealing the funds of the union. An explanation was given by Hogan to the effect that he had been forced to give up his work as a slaughterman on account of illness. Other troubles had caused him to keep payments made to him instead of giving them to the treasurer for banking. An application for bail was refused.
