FAT STOCK SALES KEEN DEMAND PREVAILS SPRING LAMB FIRMER AUCKLAND, Thursday Yardings at the Westfield fat stock sales yesterday were generally average ones. A keen demand existed in most sections, except sheep, where there was not such a keen inquiry. Spring lamb prices, however, firmed considerably. In pigs, porker values showed definite improvement. A keen sale resulted for a good average entry of beef, and values were firm on late rates. The top price for steers was £lB, compared with £lB 10s last week. Cows realised to £l2 12s 6d, as against £ll at the previous sale. Bidding was not so keen for an average yarding of sheep. Wethers generally were slightly -easier on late quotations, while ewe values were several shillings lower. Shorn wethers sold to 30s 9d, a drop of 6d. Heavy prime ewes made to 26s for woolly and 22s for shorn. Last week’s best prices were 28s and 24s 6d respectively. A smaller entry of spring lambs met with a keen competition, making to 31s 6d, as compared with 27s 3d at the previous sale. Demand for Good Calves An average entry of calves met with a ready demand for goodquality runners and vealers, which were in short supply, rough and unfinished being hard to quit. The better classes made recent quotations, runners selling to £9 2s, against £lO 15s. Vealers were 3s 6d cheaper at £7 4s. There was a keen sale for a good yarding of pigs. Prices for baconers were firm, while porker values improved. Baconers sold to £4 7s, and averaged 6£d per lb, the same as last week, while porkers made to £3 2s, against £3. Average rates for porkers were from 6£d to 7£d per lb, this being Jd higher than last week. E. Reed, Waerenga, while a line from Mr George Vosper, Cambridge, sold to £l6 17s 6d. To £ls 12s 6d was paid for a consignment from Mr Gordon Vosper, Cambridge. A consignment of cows and heifers from Mr E. M. Wright, Mauku, sold to £l2 7s 6d. Cattle from Mr H. E. Windsor, Matangi, were quoted to £lO ss. To £9 17s 6d was received from a lot from Mr J. A. Hill, Ohinewai. Dalgety and Co., Ltd. Sheep: We had a full average entry. Competition was steady and prime wethers realised late rates. Ewes were yarded in larger numbers and sold at lower values. Extra heavy prime wethers, shorn, £1 9s to £1 10s 9d; heavy, £1 7s 6d to £1 8s 6d; medium, £1 5s to £1 7s; light, £1 3s to £1 4s 6d; plain and unfinished wethers, £1 Is to £1 2s 6d; heavy prime young and maiden ewes, woolly, £1 7s to £1 9s; shorn, £1 4s to £1 6s 3d; heavy prime ewes, woolly, £1 2s to £1 6s; shorn, 18s 6d to 19s 6d; lighter, woolly, £1 0s 3d to £1 Is; shorn, 15s to 17s 6d; plain and aged ewes, shorn, 10s to 14s. Lambs: A smaller entry than last week drew keen competition and values improved noticeably on late rates. Heavy prime lamb, £1 10s to £1 11s 6d; medium, £1 8s to £1 9s 6d; lighter, £1 6s to £1 7s 6d; light, £1 4s to £1 5s 6d; small and plain lamb, £1 Is to £1 3s 6d. Calves. —There was quite a good yarding, but prime quality sorts were again in short supply, a lot of small calves coming forward. There was a good demand and values, especially for prime quality, were very firm on last week’s quotations. Runners, £4 10s to £7 10s; heavy vealers, £6 2s to £7; medium, £5 2s to £5 19s; light, £4 2s to £4 16s; small, £3 5s to £3 19s; smaller, £1 10s to £3; plain and unfinished, 18s to £2; bobby calves, 5s to 16s. Pigs were yarded in good numbers, baconers being mostly in evidence. A steady sale resulted, with values for bacon remaining very firm, while pork values showed an improvement on last week’s rates. Competition was steady throughout. with values firm at last week's quotations. Sheep.—An average market met a ready demand, with values for wethers on a par with last week and values for ewes inclined to be easier. Heavy prime wethers, £1 7s to £1 9s;
medium, £1 6s to £1 6s 9d; light, £1 3s to £1 5s 9d; small and unfinished wethers, 17s to £1 2s 9d; poorer wethers, 10s to 16s 6d; prime maiden ewes, £1 to £1 4s; heavy prime ewes, 17s 6d to 19s; medium, 16s to 17s 3d; light, 14s to 15s 9d; just killable ewes, 10s to 13s 6d; interiorly fatted ewes, 4s to 9s. Lambs.—Spring lambs in average numbers sold to a keen demand, with values improving on last week’s sale. Extra heavy prime lambs, £1 8s to £1 9s; heavy, £1 6s to £1 7s 6d; medium, £1 4s to £1 5s 9d; light, £1 to £1 3s 9d; others, 16s to 19s. Pigs.—We had an average yarding of pigs. Competition was keen and porker values improved. Baconers were firm at late quotations. Choppers, £2 6s to £3 ss; heavy and medium baconers, £4 to £4 7s; light baconers and heavy porkers, £3 6s to £3 16s; medium porkers and light porkers, £2 12s to £3 3s; small, £2 5s to £2 10s; unfinished, £1 18s to £2 4s. Store pigs were in keen demand and values were very firm. Large stores, £2 to £2 6s; slips, £1 10s to £1 18s; weaners, £1 to £1 13s. Calves.—Our entry was again large, consisting mostly of plain and small calves. Anything of quality commanded competition and values were firm at late rates. Runners, £4 10s to £7 10s; heavy vealers, £5 to £6 10s; medium, £4 5s to £4 15s; light, £3 10s to £4 2s; smaller, £2 10s to £3 8s; small, £1 10s to £2 8s; roligh calves, 15s to £1 10s; fresh dropped to three weeks’ old, 7s to £1 Bs. Alfred Buckland and Sons Alfred Buckland and Sons, Limited, reports:— At our weekly Westfield fat stock market we penned fat cattle to the number of 305 head, as against 334 head last week, comprising 147 steers and 158 cows and heifers. A keen sale resulted for a good yarding of ox beef, and last week’s quotations were maintained. Cows and heifers were also in keen demand, and, like the ox, values were on a par with last week. Extra choice ox, £2 2s per 1001 b; choice and prime, £1 18s to £2; secondary and plain, £1 15s to £1 17s; prime young cow and heifer beef, £1 17s to £1 19s; ordinary cow beef, £1 10s to £1 14s; extra heavy prime steers, £l6 to £lB, for

We had an average yarding, but good quality runners and vealers were again in short supply. There was a ready demand for all good quality calves, and values were firm at late quotations. Rough and unfinished calves were harder to dispose of. Heavy runners, £7 10s to £9 2s; lighter runners, £5 to £6 10s; heavy prime vealers, £6 to £7 4s; medium, £5 to £5 16s; light, £4 to £4 15s; smaller, £3 3s to £3 16s; small, 18s to £3; rough calves, £1 to-~£l 10s; bobby calves, 3s to 16s. A total of 244 calves was sold. There was a full entry, and a keen sale resulted. Prices for baconers were firm to slightly higher, while values for porkers improved.
