COUNTY COUNCIL MEETS FINANCES SATISFACTORY (Special to Time?') OTOROHANGA, Tue«dav. The Otorohanga County Council met today, when th* folowinir were present: I Messrs P. T. Crowley (chairman'. W. ! Thomson, V. w. Simms. Walter Pluck, ! Angus Jamieson. T. L. Wallis. H. C. Grierj son, Gerald Jackson (retiring engineer', i R. McKenzie (the new engineer) and S. J. | Fortescue (county clerk). Mr McKenzie I was welcomed hy the chairman, who stated that Mr McKenzie’s duties commenced on 1 October 2 4. | It was decided that Mr McKenzie be allowed 4sri a mile Tor the use of his own car for twelve months. It was stated that Mr Jackson had travelled 80,000 miles by car during his 91 years or service with the country, at a total cost of £905 10? 4d. The clerk was authorised to dispose oi' the car used by Mr Jackson. Financial Statement The rates collected showed a decrease of £ 1 07 2 in comparison with the same period last year. It was expected that there would toe a considerable improvement toy the date of the next meeting. Since last meeting, the Honikiwl riding had expended nearly £IOO, which accounted for a small debit balance. All the other ridings toad fairly substantial credit balances. The following were the balances of the respective ridings:—Honikiwl, £8 is 9d (dr.); Mangaorongo, £777 12s 2d; Te Ran-a-Moa. £476 7s 8d; Watpa, £192 13s sd; I Wharepapa, £4 85 3s 4d. ; The expenditure out or the riding funds ! to date was as follows:—•Honikiwl, £2 40 7s; Mangaorongo, £BBI 7s sd; Te Rau-a- ---| Moa, £4 52 11s 10d; Waipa, £484 4s lid; j Wharepapa, £633 18s lOd. Ragwort Inspection j The ragwort Inspector reported that at ! present there were 5 0 men employed in J four gangs. Forty-six men were out in ■ the held and Tour mixing the sodium and lime. C. Grierson. The engineer stated that j the sharp bends had now been removed, hut one small bridge required renewing. ! The engineer’s report regarding the improvements to the Awatanc Road, and the new bridge which was to be subsidised out of the Duncan Estate, was approved. It was decided, on the motion or Mr Simms, seconded by Mr Black, to grant a lease of a five-acre county reserve (metal) on the Honikiwi road to the adjoining property-owner Mr 11. C. DrierWorkers’ Time i The county clerk reported that on a i Certain day the ragwort workers were 1 transhipped to tneir Jobs, but because oi j rain operations ceased after two hours 1 work. A bus could not be obtained be- ! fore 3.30 p.m. to transport the gang back to Otorohanga. The men claimed a full day’s wages. He communicated wjth the Labour Department, which advised that the workers were entitled to the full day’s wages. Dedicating Subdivision Road An application from Mr F. W. G. Johnston Tor the dedication of a proposed road, ! In a subdivision of his block or residential areas adjoining otorohanga, was conj aidered. I It was stated by various councillors that ; there was a resolution on the books that i no new roads should be dedicated until i they were formed and metalled. 1 it was decided to advise the claimant 1 that IT the road was formed and metalled by the owner or the land, the council ; would be willing to have the road dedi- !. Mr F. O. R. Phillips, county solicitor, : explained the circumstances or the case. After hearing Mr Phillips, it was decided that the engineer Inspect the property and i report at ihe next meeting.
