INCREASE IN PAY EFFECTIVE FROM JUNE 1 SUPERANNUATION SCHEME (By Telegraph.— Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sunday An increased scale of pay for the New Zealand naval forces, to be known as the “1939 scale” and to be effective as from June 1 this year, has been approved by the Government, according to an announcement made yesterday by the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, in terms of a message from the Navy Office, Wellington. The Government has also decided to introduce a scheme of superannuation. Exhaustive Comparisons “The Government has received the report of the committee on naval pay and allowances set up on June 26, and has had it under consideration,” the message says. '‘The committee has made exhaustive comparisons between the existing rates of naval pay and the general level of wages, and in the light of these comparisons, and taking into consideration the recent increase of marriage allowance, the Government has approved an increased scale of pay to be known as the ‘1939 scale,’ and to become effective from June 1, 1939. “The increases, briefly, are 9d a day for able seamen ratings, lOd a day for leading ratings, and Is 4d a day for petty officer and chief petty officer ratings, with corresponding increases in the rates of progressive pay. In order to relate the pay of warrant officers to the increased rates of pay for ratings, the present rates of these officers on promotion will be increased by Is 6d a day, the threeyear rate by Is 3d a day, the sixyear rate by Is a day and the nineyear rate by 9d a day. Superannuation and Social Amenities “The Government has also decided, after a thorough review of the conditions of service, to introduce a scheme of superannuation, which is intended to supersede the system of deferred pay for all ratings who join the New Zealand &aval Forces on or after January 1, 1940. For these ratings, therefore, a new scale, to be known as the ‘1940 scale,’ will be introduced on that date, and if they so desire men now serving can be included in the superannuation scheme, in which case they would draw the new 1940 scale of pay. “Ratings who come under the 1940 scale wile contribute 5 per cent, of their pay to the superannuation fund. No alteration will be made to the present regulations for deferred pay for men now serving, unless they elect to come under the new scheme. “Details of the 1939 and 1940 scales of pay and the superannuation scheme will be published at an early date,” the message continues. “The Government is also considering further recommendations of the committee relative to social amenities and other questions and a further statement on these subjects will be made at an early date.”
