SALE OF WORK
DR BARNARDO’S HOMES BENEFIT A very successful sale of work organised by members of the Barnardo Helpers’ League at the Whitiora School, was held in St. Paul’s Schoolroom, which had kindly been lent for the occasion. The function was opened by the Mayoress, Mrs H. D. Caro, who spoke of the worthiness of the cause and wished the sale every success. She was presented with a lovely shoulder spray by Joy Morrison, one of the youngest members. Mrs Acutt, travelling secretary from London, in thanking the Mayoress for her attendance, stated that today hundreds of Dr. Barnardo’s Cottages are empty, the villages deserted and the children evacuated to all parts of England where they will be safe from the menace of enemy bombs, and she urged the children to do their utmost to help in this time of trouble. She heartily thanked them for their splendid effort. A short programme by the children from Primer 4 concluded a very happy time, during which brisk business was done at the stalls. The Stallholders The stallholders were as follows: Flower stall, Lenora Smith and Dulcie Bartlett; toy stall, Doreen Fisher and June Samuel; work stall, Hilda Nye and Ngaire Dennis; produce stall, Arthur Leong, Basil Street, Andrew Galloway; book stall, Barry Smith, Andrew Everest, Murray Dick; fancy stall, Audrey Fisher and Audrey Lewis; dolls stall, Joyce Thornley, Leonie Ilalcrow and Molly Smith; soft drinks, John Neave, Warwick Sanders, cake stall, Joy Beard, Noreen Felmingham; sweet stall, Jean Hughes, lsobel Herdman and Shirley Graham.
