TIMES NEEDLECRAFT SERVICE

WOMEN’S INSTITUTES AT MOTUMAOHO Mrs Lennon presided at the September meeting of the Motumaoho Women’s Institute held in the hall on Wednesday. The motto was, “A merry heart kills more germs than any other medicine.” One new member was welcomed. Mesdames Lennon and Warren were elected delegates to attend the bienniel conference to be held in Hamilton in November. It was'decided to send a Christmas gift of three New Zealand books to the link at Canford Cliffs. Mrs Dernier has donated one book. A letter from Miss Feilder, formerly of Morrinsville, 'was read. Miss Feilder has visited the Institute link in England and our link correspondent, Mrs Williams. A letter was also read from the link correspondent. The recommendations for the birthday party to be held in October were read. It was decided to hold a dance after the party, the funds to go towards the Red Cross. A tableau was presented by Mrs Waldron, the scene being from “The Merry Wives of Windsor.” The players were Mesdames Waldron, Smith and Hucker, and Misses N. Fenwick and M. Smith. The competitions resulted as follows:—Knitted socks, Miss D. Dernier 1; vase of spring flowers, Mrs W. Smith 1; best bloom, Miss A. Ferguson 1, Miss P. Horniblow 2; Mesdames Lyndon, Meharry, Luke, W. Stark, Harbottle and Maber, (equal), 3. Afternoon tea was served after which a most interesting talk on Westminster Abbey was given by Mrs Jenner. The speaker described abbeys as they were in olden days and gave a full description of the abbey as it is today. The traditions of the Westminster School were also touched upon. Mrs Jenner, who was given a hearty vote of thanks, stressed the point that words could not describe tlio beauty of the abbey. The wandering shilling was won by Mrs Lyndon. The-hostesses were Mesdames Meharry, Maber, Lyndon and Miss P. Horniblow. AT HINUERA The September meeting of the Hinuera Women’s Institute took the form of a Scotch afternoon, Mrs E. Robinson presiding over a good attendance. The meeting opened with the singing of the National Anthem, followed by a toast to Scotland sung by Mrs J. Menzies. The motto was a quotation from Burns. Many of those present were wearing tartan and the Scotch atmosphere was further in evidence with heather decorations and the tartan cloth on the president’s table, A motion of sympathy with two members who had recently suffered bereavement was passed. Scotch songs were sung by Mrs J. Menzies and Mrs Langlands, who also sang a duet, and a reading By Mrs A. Hammonds was much enjoyed. A Scotch reel danced by Mrs J. Menzies, Mrs A. Rowe, Mrs W. Brown and Miss I. Germann, caused much amusement and community singing was enjoyed. Mrs F. Toogood acted as accompanist. Hostesses were Mrs B. Tisch, Mrs D. Mclsaac and Mrs L. Deed. AT NAWTON-ROTOKAURI A special afternoon in aid of the Sunshine League was held in the Nawton Hall on Wednesday. Mrs Ousley presided, and an enjoyable programme was given by the following: Songs by Mrs Garland and Mrs Wilson; dances, Miss Bluett. Mrs McLaehlan officiated at the piano. A very interesting talk and demonstration on home nursing was given by Mrs Luxford, who was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Competitions were won by Mrs McLachlan and Mrs Luxford. The sales table, in charge of Mrs White, did good business. Though the attendance was not large, the proceeds were very satisfactory, and Mrs Ousley warmly thanked the members for their help. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Duff. Harris and Rollinson.

AT MAUNGATAUTARI The September meeting of the Maungatautari Women's Institute was held in the hall recently. An original Golden Thread was contributed by Mrs Wallace, showing the influence of cheerful, helpful literature. Elocutionary items were given by Mrs Leo Griffen and pianoforte items by Mrs Devonport. The sales table was taken by Mrs McVicar. The cooking display was won by Mrs Budge and Mrs Alistair Meeking. The flower competition was won by Miss Hicks and Mrs Dallinger. AT SPRINGDALE The monthly meeting of the Springdale Women’s Institute was held in Lhe Springdale Hall recently, the president, Mrs E. Palliser being in the chair. There was a large attendance, and a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. Two new members, Mesdames Aid and Patterson were enrolled. A discussion as to whether the branch should suspend activities for the time being was held and it was finally decided to carry on. Members were asked to bring what gifts they had on hand for the patients of Makogai Island, to next month’s meeting. Mrs A. Readhead gave a demonstration on how to arrange flowers for display. Pansy plants to be used later in a competition were distributed. The results of the various competitions were as follows :—Woman’s slip, Mrs W. Malcolm 1, Miss P. Johnson 2; pikelets, Miss P. Bridgeman 1, Miss J. Johnston 2, Mrs Malcolm 3; vase of flowers, Mrs Palliser 1, Mrs Bridgeman 2, Mrs Rae and Miss Johnson (equal) 3. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames S. Davies, E. Johansen, and I. Barnett. AT WAITOA The September meeting of the Waitoa Women’s Institute was held in the Waitoa Hall recently, Mrs H. Kerr presiding over a large attendance of members. The Institute Glee Club entertained with items, Mrs A. E. Blackwell gave a solo, and Mrs Kerr and Mrs H. 0. Cooper sang a duet. Mrs R. Colson gave an interesting demonstration of the method of ruching cushions, a vote of thanks being accorded her. The roll call, “ A quick pudding,” brought forth many useful recipes; the thought for the month was, “ What 1 spend 1 lose, what I keep will be left for others, what I give away will remain forever mine.” A competition for a plain stitched handkerchief was won bv Mrs R. Colson, with Mrs A. E. Blackwell second, and Mrs W. Craig third. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames T. Reay, F Cooper and F. Yarrall. AT GORDONTON There was a fair attendance of members of the Gordonton Women’s Institute at the September meeting, which was held in the Gordonton Hall supper room. Mrs Williamson presided. A new member was welcomed and the business of the meeting was followed by an interesting and instructive talk on gardening by Mrs Cox. Mrs N. K. Taylor won the compe- , tition lor an original verse, and the [ meeting closed with afternoon tea.
