THEFT OF CYCLE
HIRE PURCHASE OFFENCE FARM LABOURER REMANDED ‘‘l am in doubt placing you on probation,” said Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, to-day to William John Hamilton, aged 22, a farm labourer, of Te Awamutu, who appeared on one charge of the theft of a bicycle valued at £ll 15s, the property of George Richard Holton, and another of the unlawful conversion of a bicycle valued at £2 from Roy James Shaw. Accused pleaded guilty to both charges and elected to be dealt with summarily. In a statement accused admitted the offence, said Detective Henry. He said he obtained a bicycle on the hire purchase system from Auckland. He sent the instalments to his mother, intending that they should be forwarded to the cycle company. He thought the company had been -satisfied. Accused later sold the wheels of the machine for 15s, and the frame was taken by a man named Lloyd. Accused did not give Lloyd permission to sell the frame. With regard to the conversion charge, accused said he had received Shaw's permission to use the machine. He thought Shaw knew his whereabouts as no attempt had ever been made to recover the machine. Shaw could have it any time he wished. Assumed Name Used Detective J. Hayes said accused bought a cycle from Auckland on the hire purchase system and paid a deposit. He bought the machine in the assumed name of John Harris, hut lie could not be traced from the address he gave. He did not keep up the payments, but sold the wheels of the cycle to another youth. The frame was stolen from accused by a man named Lloyd, who would be dealt with later. Accused was before the court in 1935 for theft and was placed on probation for six months. ‘I now have a job in Te Awamutu. and 1 think the cycle club there and a number of the business men will speak l'or me,” said Hamilton.
