SCHEME DROPPED
TOWN HALL PROPOSALS BOROUGH COUNCIL DECISION TRANSPORT TERMINALS PLANNED Proposals for the erection of a Town Hall in Hamilton have now been abandoned by the Hamilton Borough Council, and on the site set aside at Garden Place for the building the council will establish a transport terminus. This announcement was made at the annual meeting of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce last night by the Mayor of Hamilton, Mr H. D. Caro. Mr Caro said the Garden Place scheme had made considerable pro- * gress and three-quarters of the work J had been completed in removing the ‘j hill. A start will be made in October I on the remaining portion of the hill I and the work should be completed 5 within four months from that date. Plans For Gardens The {gardens between the parking areas would be laid down in grass with modern seats about the turf. A large sundial would be erected in the centre of the forward area. In the i lanes between the gardens 160 cars would be parked. The area adjoining Anglesea Street, previously set aside for the Town Hall, would now become a civic centre, as it was considered that the hall to be erected by the Winter Show Association would serve Hamilton for many years. A loan poll would go before j the ratepayers for the purchase from j the special rating area of this land i for the civic centre, j Additional parking space would be made available by having a civic i centre. A transport terminal for buses ! and service cars would also be established there.
