COMMERCE CHAMBER

INCREASING INTEREST SEVERAL NEW SCHEMES OFFICERS FOR THE YEAR An appeal for greater co-operation of the businessmen with the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce was made at the annual meeting last night when 26 people attended. Both the retiring president, Mr A. G. Ward and the elected president for the year, Mr G. W. Pepperell spoke of the need for each member securing new members for the chamber. An innovation planned to increase interest in the body will be made this year as a result of a suggestion made last night by Mr P. Reid. He suggested that each monthly meeting of the chamber should be a general one so that all members might attend, and not only a council meeting as hitherto. The council will meet each month before the general meeting. Mr Reid said members lost interest in the affairs of the chamber when they had a chance to attend the annual meeting only. Junior Chamber Suggested On the suggestion of Mr Ward, the incoming council will consider the advisability of forming a junior chamber in Hamilton. The suggestion was for a branch consisting of young men under 30 years of age. It would give those men an opportunity to voice their opinions regarding matters relating to the welfare of the town. Support for the scheme was voiced by tiie Mayor of Hamilton, Mr H. D. Caro, who said the plan had been inaugurated with great success in Auckland. Financial Position The receipts and payments account showed a cash balance of £lsl 11s, the total receipts being £l4B 19s. The actual loss for the year as shown on the income and expenditure account was £2 19s. Accumulated funds totalled £55 11s and assets were shown at £64 ss. The officers elected for the year were:—President, Mr C. W. Pepperell; vice-president, Mr B. E. Woodhams; council, Messrs J. S. Anchor, B. H. Andrews, J. J. Branton, N. H. Hooker, C. Y. Nieklin, F. L. Perk, P. Reid, T. J. Shaw, W. R. Shattock, A. J. Yendell (retaining their seats) and Messrs A. G. Ward, W. H. Braddock, H. H. Fow, J. R. Henderson and L. E. Haines (elected); auditor, Mr W. H. Allen; vigilance committee, Messrs A. G. Ward, W. R. Shattock, J. D. M. Foreman, R. G. Young (country districts representative).
